The best way to get self-employed LEGALLY in China is to register a company. The Chinese Company Law has reduced the required minimum amount of registering capital, to only 30,000RMB.
Of course, you need a registered office, which is required, but it could be VIRTUAL, which means you "rent" an cheap office (normally at sub-urban area),which only charge you 1,200RMB/yr, and you don't even need to go there.
After you get your company, you are now able to obtain a 12 months' work permit. I know it sounds a little complicated. We can help if you are coming to Shanghai. louie_pdi@sohu.com

Hi Gemax,
Come to china, you will find a lot of friend. But after retirement, why not go to Australia ? I just think our food ,vegetable's price is higher and higher.
When I am child, greengrocery sells 1 yuan , but now is 3.5 yuan. Though the salary still be higher , but they are not balanced.

I think self-employment is a good way of the work. And you can have enough time and more spare time by yourself. not restrain by anyone.

Yes, I hacve the same idea as you !
But i don't know how to start and i am lack of experience !
Ok,if you do not want to open a company and just want to do trades ,it is OK to start your business or work personally, no need to register and no any other certificate !
But rememmber , do not be a scammer !
