How To Check Fake USB Flash & Memory Cards?
Post 1 of 14

Today I want to introduce one useful program for checking memory cards and USB flash drives. Check Flash is a small, stand alone, portable utility designed to check the health of flash drives. The most useful part of Check Flash is that it can run a read and write test on the drive. During the read and write test it fills the flash drive up with a temporary file to make sure the flash drive is the size that it says it is. This is an issue as many fake flash drives like the cheap ones available on eBay or Alibaba are hacked to report to Windows that they are 8GB or so, but are really only 64mb.

Check Flash also has a “drive map” section which will show you any bad sectors on your flash drive.

Check Flash can also run a readability test on the drive and save/load an image of the files on the drive for backup purposes.

You can download this useful program as below: (I uploaded it in Rapid Share)

Great article, and also why USB drives bought in bulk should be tested by an inspection service to verify that the flash drive is of the appropriate size and specification.  Ranger

Hi Freddie,

Thank you for this wonderful software.

Questions:

How many cycles do we need to test the authencity of the real capacity.

What is the "burn it" function used for ?

Bye ... Keep up the good work !

Generally 2 circles is enough for testing a card, but it is bettter you try more than two times so that   it brings more accurate results.  "burn it!" will burn your card! Copy and write as much as possible until your card  damaged. But Chinese memory cards will take too much time for testing.

There are over 50 companies who are lying about a 128gb usb flash drive.  I am looking into an international class action lawsuit against these companies please review my scam article on 128gb usb flash drives.

Could you please let me know where it shows you the flash disks capacity?  Could you maybe tell us what the different functions are like small pattern set/full pattern set, access type, do you know what they mean?

Sorry For my late reply, it was a long time I didn't check this post.

Small pattern set:

Very fast check and ignore some small errors.

Full pattern set:

Check very deep and show simple errors also.

Access type:

Use temporary file: Program will access to the temp file in your system and start to check.

As logical device:
you would be able to save and load image on your device. Also you can have read stability test.

As physical device:

you would be able to check capacity. after selecting this option, it will tell you what is the exactly capacity and sectors available for your card. for example for one 2GB card it should be 19800.00, (if you select this option then you need to format your disk again so you can use it again under your OS). after test finished you should check how many sectors program verified. If in the middle you received some red sectors, means some sectors already damaged, it cause by different reasons, sometime some memory cards return to factory for warranty, they repair and sell them again, so card will have bad sectors, so good to check them here.

New version of this program, you can download here:

Hi all,

This seems to be a very handy and useful piece of software to have.

Just wondering if this or another program can fix or mark out any bad sectors so that the flash drive can still be useful?

Just checked my 8GB flash drive and found 13 errors on it.

Still have not tried the capacity check yet  ;-)

Thanks

There are quite a few methods to testing flash drives for actual size, I've written a little guide for a couple of other methods in case anyone is interested or would find it useful.
