America, the Greatest?
Post 1 of 7

America, the world greatest nation, the model of democracy, the role model for human right, religious freedom, racial harmony, revolutionistic culture etc.

For years people buy into anything America, their cultures, their fashion, their sports, their movies, their songs, their IT (both hardware and software) and their Bonds, both private and government issued.

Warren Buffet is rich, Bill Gate even richer, so is the Wal-Mart family. They are the envy of the world.

But this is all an illusion, America is in deep trouble. Have been all these years, but now much deeper.

They are the biggest debtor nation on earth, both privately or the government.

For years, the American Government has devise all economical and financial methods and know how to stay afloat and has barely done so without creating more trouble back home.

Like the recent sub-prime mortgate loan, the feel good sentiments for past years has fuel the loan and now the bubble has burst, it is time to make amend. And they are dragging the world with them.

Strange, many people still laud America. Didn't they realise that even for the general American public, the rest of the world are helping a large majority of them to buy property/houses by giving indirect loan in the form of bonds. This same loan is now back to haunt them.

This article is not here to condemn the American. It is here to raise awareness. Awareness that hopefully can help to change thing.

There are a much larger picture here. American debts came in many forms. We are all tied to American apron string, and whether we like it or not, we will have to ensure America survival for our own survival, this is a Vicious Circle, to which there is no stopping until a balance is obtain.

This balance can only be achieved with better awareness and not through *** worshipping of an iconic structure that is not going to withstand testing.

Pray for America to have some good leaders, pray for support for the Amercan (only this time aas someone in needs). As long as America is in trouble, the world will be in trouble until the vicious circle is broken.

The world are too closely link for comfort, but is it for better or for worst, it is a debate open to all.

For us lay-people, I just want us to realise a few thing:

1.   America is no more the greatest nation than your own Country.

2.   You should be proud of yourself, America need you as much as you need them

3.   Why worshipped a culture that has not enhance national unity as much as your own cuture.

4.   Why hero worshipped for example Bill Gate. His billions came mainly from non-American. It is time you be proud of your own local hero.

5.   Why condemn them, if not for the American, the world may be in even worst shape.

All these may sound contridictory, but the hope is  that this post may generate more information for our better understanding. For all we know, some wise man out there may contribute some ideas that will prevent another world recession that is waiting to occur any moment.

Hi Frank Yeo,

This is the natural cycle of a nation. As the Chinese saying goes: The nation's wealth can only go for three generations.

The America of the post World War II was the time of its peak, but there was a balance of power from the East European continent, USSR. Then was the cold war, which ended by the breaking of the Berlin wall where East and West Germany was reunited. And the breakup of the Soviet Union into smaller states around the region of the Black Sea and spread up to North Pakistan.

America is still the most powerful country in the world, in terms of military strength, in the high technology warfare, and in almost every sports and manufacturing. And as you mention is loosing their cutting edge. This is due to the higher costs to do the production, and the availability of cheaperr alternatives like China and India. Most of the companies in Silicon Valley, California have moved to Bangalore, India, and the computer hardware and electronic factories to China.

While watching the show: SPIDERMAN II, there was one scene about the Grandma of Spiderman. She lost Uncle Ben when he was shot by a robber on the run. Uncle Ben refused to surrender his car to the getaway robber. Grandma had no income, as she was jobless, and Spiderman could not even pay his own rent for a small apartment. She faces Foreclosure and the house was reposessed by the bank.

This scene somehow unwittingly depicts the many American families whose jobs were taken away by the companies shifting their operations overseas. The people without jobs could not service their loans and the mortgage of their properties, so the banks and financial institutions reposses the assets colateral. It has involved so many people, that the homeless live on their mobile homes.

This problem has to be solved from its roots, the revamping of the American industries, the creation of jobs for some cutting edge factories and businesses which America has the advantage. For example, the Aviation industries, like Boeing, the Power Generation like Westinghouse and GE, and Nuclear Power Plants, space age technology, medical science, Agricultural food technology and Nanotechnology.

Street

Sorry, is Street also Dick Moby??

Actually my article was meant to highlight some of the misconception carried by many people.

There is now a overly idolising of everything American. Look at these forum here in Alibaba, everything from America Independence day, to which city in America do you like, to America man, to dream of studying in America. It is all about idolising a cultures and customs far removed from our own.

I have nothing about America, and having stay there for 2 years do appreciate much of their culture but not to the extend of overhauling my believed in the 5000 years of chinese cultures.

There much be a healthy respect for all nation, race and culture and there should be pride of one owns.

Hopefully, these forum will teach and instilled pride in us of our own.

And thank you for responding. I was thinking I being boycotted.

Frank,

Thank you for being candid, and direct. However you have used words such as "idolise" and 5000 years of chinese culture as your own, and last but not lesser, pride of the culture.

You talk about 5000 years of history, but the people who built the Great Pyramids dated back 5500 BC, that is twice the age as yours, and the Sphinx dated back to at least 10,500 BC in Egypt, which was suspected to be the cradle of mankind.

Cultures have no moral values, so there is nothing to be proud of. There is a difference between cultures and human behaviour or social norms, which has much to do with the laws of the nation, and that is determined by the people themselves. For example homosexual and gay marriage is accepted by some society, while it is condemned and abored by others.

We (Singaporean) is NOT Chinese culture, we may have some remnants of the Chinese culture in us due to our heritage from our parents and grand parents, but can we consider ourself to be of Chinese culture?

The first Emperor of China, the Chin Dynasty build the Great Wall, which is the greatest man made structure on Earth. That was great and a pride of the time for his achievement. Then through the years, the Khans have penetrated the wall by going around, and the Manchu tribe, which was normadic had the gates of the inpentratable walls opened by the inside  by a General who had fallen in love with a  fair lady and wanted to let the Manchus in to rescue her from the inprisonment.

These are historical events, and they came and gone, but people still live and  we have new generations. That is the norm of human society, to mate and have children, and they also follow the life cycle. However, the perversion of this norm is set with the acts of abnormal sexual intercourse, such as oral sex, and homosexual marriage. The introduction of contraceptives, the practice of abstaining from sex and marriage in celebacy.  This will bring to the destruction of the human race, if the next generation of people is not reproduced. ... can you see the big picture?

This is most insulting. Look like a change of name name do not necessitate a change of attitude.

"... can you see the big picture?". This is a question I would ask you instead.

I have written this topic in hope of creating self awareness, a introspection so that we can be proud of ourself, our upbringing and ultimately to have self-esteem.

It is not a topic to discuss about cultures and customs and least of all to compare between nationalities.

Irrespective of of cuture and the length of which, we seek to value thats which is good and refined that which is damaging.

You are way off course here and with due respect, who are you to assume you can teach me about thing you only read in book.

I have travel extensively and have seen too much injustice in this world. But the thing that trouble me most is self-respect that many have lost. The way a under-developed nation perspective of a developed nation. The misconception many held.

I hope through this forum, with my limited capability, I can at least contribute some pointer and hope to raise some awareness and pride of our heritage.

I am not here to debate about who have the oldest heritage or culture or indeed which culture is better.

I am a chinese, whether I am a Singaporean or otherwise will not change my view or my pride in the link to chinese or Confusian teaching. You are free to adapt your own.

This forum should be here to educate and for the betterment of all the member, not one where we seek for status and should never be a platform to show-of our little knowledge and theories.

Except for my children or my student, I will never ask if they have "see the larger picture". Who are we to presume that we are looking at the larger picture and others not. And is there a larger picture that understanding ourself and loving our self.

Yeo Yo,

So as you called yourself.

You said you have travelled extensively and seen much injustice in this world. Tell us where have your journey taken you and what injustice have you witnessed in this world? If that is your boasting to qualify you of your own authority, what are you there for and how long did you stay in that place.

You are way off course here and with due respect, who are you to assume you can teach me about thing you only read in book.

Here in the forum, we are not here to teach you how to suck egg, neither would you assume that you are better than others, the presumption that we only read in book.

Ah, so, you are Chinese, named English name, Frank, regardless of your nationality as a Singaporean or otherwise, good "hao lian lah, seh bin ho quay kan chiew chiah. " As the Taiwanese MP said, you are just a nose dropping, a small frog in the well.

And you are a father and a teacher? I say those who cannot practice, teach, those who teach and make mistake on the white board, simply take the eraser and clean off the board, but if an architect or engineer makes a mistake, it will be obvious to everyone.
