Hello everybody,

I just wanted to ask, other than price, what do buyers/buyer's agents/buying houses in the RMG industry look for in suppliers before awarding orders to them?

How important are social compliance issues? Labour conditions? Worker safety? Size of company? Equipment used? Number of years in business? Certifications? Etc, etc. If you were to rank the top 5 most important criteria that a buyer uses to select a supplier, what would they be?

Basically, I am designing a brochure for a new high-tech denim factory located in an Export Processing Zone in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This brochure is intended to create awareness of the company, and hopefully help bring in orders once the company starts production in Q1 2009.

Thanks in advance for your answers - Saquib

I think you get to provide the best service like us. We deal with many buyers from all over the world. We do the fashion apparel and kinds of Jerseys.

Our products are great ,and we also provide the best service. Because the buyers need the value from us.

That is my opinion. Hope you like it.

Thanks Allen, but I needed something more concrete. In a sense, good service is an automatic expectation and highlighting it usually won't bring any added benefits or lend credibility to the supplier. Claiming "best service" is also difficult as it is not easily quantifiable and many others make the same claim.

Hi Saquib, Very Rightly said. All the companies claim to have best prices and best quality but by just mentioning it doesn't influence any buyer. The first thing i guess buyer looks for is your existing clients or references with whom you have work with already, may be some in their area and then cross check with them about the services of the supplier. Secondly if working with a factory then a single factory visit can explain the company structure, way of working , Workers body language and supplier capabilities. Third thing is a good buyer will always look for a company with some certifications like ISO certified companies . Thats how we work, dont know about others.

From Western point of view, I think the following 5 items are important for a seller

1) Communication (must be able to speak and understand buyer's language, usually english, only 1 person dealing with inquiry etc...)

2) Quality of product (ISO, BS and etc..)

3) Certification (Buuyer cant buy your product if it not certified to their standard, CE, RoHS, WEEE and etc...)

4) Price (try to take the hassel away from them and offer them complete price or price break down e.g. FOB, Minimum order qty, CF, CIF etc..)

5) Short lead time /quick turn around.

Hope this helps

do business , the most is the honest. but the first step is very very important. so choosing the first partner for every company need their ten times cautious. nowadays world is a very competative business world. everyone is the hunter while everyone is the food. so I just suggest that do business on one side with your honest heart ,but on the other side with your cautious mind.

From my pointe of view, I think that the rank goes like this:

A, a way to prove that your products' quality is great by some certifications, samples, etc.

  B, the price you offer is competitive;

C, the order process is simple yet effective. The leading time is quick yet quality is ensured.

D, to prove that the company has good management and good system to go on develop. More importantly, the supplier will be reliable and trustable. Usually, you can invite your clients to visit. Personal contact would be better than only e-mails.

E, effective and friendly communication between the buyer and the seller.

This is what I understand the top 5 for sellers. As a professional dancewear and dance shoe company in Beijing, we are always doing the same as the above. (https://www.dancewearchina.com)

If i am a buyer, i will choose the suppliers according to the rules as follows.

Firstly, they should have super service. When you are facing up with some problems, they will help me patiently and carefully.

This is most important.

Secondly, they have good reputation in their industry.

Thirdly, they must have the ability to produce the high quality goods on time.

Last but not the least, the price they quoted is with reasonable profit not on wild speculations.

Hope my opinion help you a bit.

Dear Mr. Saqib,

I think we must know about the supplier's goodwill.

We must know that does he fulfill his commitment or not?
We must know that is this supplier able to provide us quality at prompted time?

Thanks for your interest in my reply.

Regards,
Sheikh Wajahat.

Dear Saquib,

According to me buyer in textile field looks for following things

1. Reliable company with clean and good production facitlity, the first look at the factory should give them a feeling of quality. (normally most factory i visited in Pakistan are dirty, unorganised, machines scattered and not arranged in line, not enough lighting, or direct sunlight falling on the work table. cut pieces and finished garments scattered all over. This doesnot give a quality look. The company should have a large show room, with production samples, raw material samples etc., for the buyer to choose from.

2. The price - not just cheap prices, once we place a large volume of orders to a factory in china because the factory was clean and cheap but later started the major head ache. the boss accepted even prices lover than my bosses target price and later placed the orders to more than 30 subcontractors, every one had a different quality standrad and product finishing. Cheap pricing means you should have good source of rawmaterial suppliers.

3. Know how- I find in china there are lot of factoriies who are so called "me to" factories. Meaning they too can just do the products in their field, but you bring up something new they dont have any idea of how it is doen or where they can source it. So know how of fabrics, dyeing, washing, other special finish is very important for garment trade.

4. Communication - The factory should be able to quote price and reply customers in a short pan of time, most people expect immediate reply. Many buyers complain, that sampling is very very slow. Fast sampling is a huge advantage in business.

5. Existing customer base - At last the existing customer base plays a important role too to certain buyers. Factory approved by other buyers project a good image on the company.

these are the things that makes a buyer give you the first order. Then  later comes all the other things like honesty, fair busienss practice, etc.,

I hope you find this information useful

Regards,

Srini
