Hello everybody,

I just wanted to ask, other than price, what do buyers/buyer's agents/buying houses in the RMG industry look for in suppliers before awarding orders to them?

How important are social compliance issues? Labour conditions? Worker safety? Size of company? Equipment used? Number of years in business? Certifications? Etc, etc. If you were to rank the top 5 most important criteria that a buyer uses to select a supplier, what would they be?

Basically, I am designing a brochure for a new high-tech denim factory located in an Export Processing Zone in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This brochure is intended to create awareness of the company, and hopefully help bring in orders once the company starts production in Q1 2009.

Thanks in advance for your answers - Saquib

Basically I have found Alibaba the most frustrating website for serious buyers. The biggest limiting factor is that nobody understands that PRICE of goods is a huge determining factor when deciding to buy. Instead they engage in useless communication only to find that they are too expensive and you prefer someone cheaper.

What I do now is to totally ignore anyone who relies to my enquiry but does not tell me the price of the goods. That leaves only a few to choose from and makes life easier.

However, there are certain items where there are only one or two suppliers. For example I have struggled to get anyone to supply Jatropha seeds, and in the end I physically travelled to India and got them outside Alibaba.

The discipline on Alibaba is too low. There should be a basic standard and level on information compulsory to supply when answering to a query.  This should include price and shipping cost to a destination.

In my opinion, the important things are quotation and sevice. Reasonable quotation is the first, then supplying whole processing sevice, which include freight, installation, training, and smooth running, is indispensable.

Well, i like to say as a purchasing manager of a chemical conpany that even thouhg all you say is important, for the first order i take into account these things: price, quality,  availability, and estimated delivery time. these  are the most important issues i have in mind, the rest is promises that youll find out if the can sustain after the first or even more orders. When a company brags about being about service there is no other way than trying, so to find a good supplier is not only looking and comunicating, it has to involve buying and trying . so in my case i say it again and its no arranged in order of importance, it all depend on the price, quality, availability and estimate delivery time

I got valuable suggestion here and share same opinion to some of the ideas. A good question from Saquib in " How do I conveince people at the first sight if I do not have reference under my belt" Especially in the virture world of internet?

As a buyer, I prefer to have a look on the sample to evaluate how good the supplier is besides the price offered. If the sample can not match your expectation, there is pointless to get a very best price. I will buy sample from supplier if the price given is within my expectation, if the order involves great fortune, then I will take a trip to visit the factory and discuss face to face to the owner or engineers and random check their products in production.

Besides, preparing of technical paper and specifications are important.

After all, as a member of Alibaba, i prefer to have price in bulk, price in sample and minimum quantity plus products technical data. E-mail, website, instant masseger, fax and telephone, web meeting are good communication tools with your customer but better use more than one communication tool.

This is a very popular question to many new importers, so I post here hope to be useful for you. although it is a old question, but there is still many buyers do know know the bellow skills.

Here are some ways for your reference:

1. To give a small order for testing to your supplier.

2. If big order, ask any helper to help you to verify the company for you have a pre-shipment inspection, it cost just a little.

3. If you can get some cerfitifcates those shows ok to trade with, such like a SGS report of this company, I think it is quite credable.

As you are new in trade with the suppliers, I suggest you to get any one to be your representitive at your local export country, so that they can help you to avoid many problems that may happen. I think you can look into the topic here arround that many buyers here complains about problems happened with the suppliers.
