WENDY VU speaks and reads 11 languages
Post 1 of 10
Hey guys,

I read
in Business Travel Forum there are so many members of Alibaba who claim they can speak more than 3 languages beside their Mother tongue. These days, it is not difficult to pick up languages as the media and method of learning becomes more accessible, and one can learn a language on the move with PODCAST.

However, if we look closer to many of the claims, their linguistic ability is only the casual greetings, such as "hello, or good morning or thanks." nothing more, and they cannot read the native scripts, maybe the Romanised forms or the Hanyu Pinyin for the Chinese, yet they boast.

Further to the search, I went into the prodigy kids, and found one interesting person, Wendy, a 8 year old girl, Vietnamese, who plays the keyboard, composes her own music. speaks and reads 11 languages. Wendy Vu's father is a Dentist, she speaks the languages fluently, and understands them, including the English language. This has to be shown only in U-Tube, because seeing and hearing is believing. See if you guys who claim to be able to speak other foreign languages have the same ability as this little girl. See if you can pickup the languages she spoke and read: Russian, Hindi, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, English, Portugese, Cantonese and of course, Vietnamese.

#1 English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic

#2 Portugese, French Russian

#3 French, Arabic (repeat), Mandarin

#4 Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi

#5 Hindi, Vietnamese, composed 44 songs so far

A few years ago I was stationed in Bangkok, I advertised on the local paper to hire a few sales and trainee engineers. There are a lot of candidates who turned up, we I looked at the interview form all of them ticked English as the other language they can speak, upon asking them, most of them only know yes, no and OK despite being a fresh graduate.

Recently I went to Seam Reap, , to my surprise there are so many street children speaking very fluent English with American accent with perfect grammar. Some of the even can speak Mandarin, Japanese, German and many other languages that I would not understand. There was one girl age about 6 to 8 yrs hold who was selling post cards, she kept on counting the postcards 1 to 20 in at least 20 languages. I would say if you have a chance to practice and someone to speak to all the time you would pick up quite fast, if you don’t you lose it quite fast as well….cheers !

Kim Peek is a autistic, he was diagnosed as insane during his young age, and sent to a mental institution.

Scientists probe his brain and discovered the abnormality, the absence of the Grey Matter which inhibits his memory, and makes him a normal person. Kim is different from the other autistic people with extraordinary abilities, he has the capability to process the nformation he has from his memory.

Such people with special abilities are called savant, and it happened because of some abnormality in the brain. There are people who are not autistic and yet possess the extraordinary gifts, these people suffered a trauma on the brain which develops this connectivity. People like Orlanzo Clements, who had an accident, knocked on the head, and became a sculpture of clay for animals. Could not read or write, but could do these animals on clay with great precision.

There is also Ben, who is blind from birth, but he can skateboard through the streets, avoid obstacles and go through narrow paths just by clicking and hearing the sound. An audio gram was performed on him, and his hearing is normal above 25 dB of sound, he can hear, nothing extraordinary, but his brain can discipher the sound bounced back and quickly sees it in his mind the picture of what ordinary people sees.

There is Stephen Wittshire, aka the human camera. Stephen is autistic but with a special talent to memorize the picture of landscape, buildings and city contours by just looking at it one time, and he is able to reproduce it on canvas or paper.

Some Savants display mathematical skills, able to calculate the exact day of the week in a calendar date hundreds of years ago, Daniel Tammet is one guy in Britain who can comfound the students in Oxford by his mathematical genius.

Next on my list will be on the Savants and their extraordinary abilities, that makes them special and enhanced with abilities far above ordinary person.

Hmmm well I can speak 7 languages native level... (Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Spanish) am an accomplished Pianist, composer and I play 4 other instruments. Travelled half the world, have a 3rd degree blackbelt... 2 degrees 2 associate degrees.... among many other things... I don't have a photographic memory... and I am not Autistic. I am much better than the girl in the sense I am more professional.... but then again.. I'm 26 ^-^

BTW guys, learning a new language is not difficult. Even in the English language, there's only about 300 words that we use + you can squeeze all the grammer in a single page.

Theoretically... spend a week on pronounciation.... memorize 10 words a day....and spend a few days going over the grammer principles... you can learn a new language...  so don't give up!! ^-^

Dear Park
You are Korean.
These are the marks of a Korean, most of them take up Taekwondo, when they were young, and after middle school, at age 16, they must go for Military Service for the country, and excel in the martial art skill, get another den in their black belt.

Of course they have the native language of Korean, with the unique scripts, but the older folks those survivors of the Japanese occupation, speak and write Japanese, and when the Americans came, they pick up English, the American version. The Chinese language will be a breeze, if you have mastered the Chinese and Japanese Kanji.

Then came the French and Spanish, which is frequently spoken in some parts of the United States, near to the Mexican borders or among the Perto Ricans community. French will be towards the North in Quebec, or Montreal, in Canada. These two languages, French will be a bit harder due to its vocalisation and many silent characters. Both of them are in the Romanish writings, and so it will not be of a greater challange to the would be learner.

However, Wendy can read Hindi, Arabic which native scripts are much different from the Hirakana, or Takakana, or Kanji, or the Chinese characters. Even those traditional Chinese and short form Chinese characters are different. Ancient Koreans use the Chinese Traditional Characters.

In the music skills, the basic instrument that most kids learn is the piano, the keyboard will be a duplication of the piano, except for a few variations and double of triple stack keyboards. But a switch to the string instruments will be a challange, if piano students were to pick up the violin for example, or the wind instrument, like the flute, or Sax.

Good to know you, at your age, tell me are you still available? The Koreans are a group of the upcoming people of great talents and skills. Most probably you are seeking a PhD, or Master Degree right now aren't you?

Hi Jay,

Thank you for sharing your experience, and you are right in the one of the two methods to learning a new foreign language.

According to the originator of website: koreanovernight.com There are two ways to leaning the language.

1. Intricately learn the language by constructing sentences, word by word in the school setting, where there is a tutor and student classroom setting.

2. Like what you suggest for working people, write down 100 to 200 vocabulary words most commonly used in your environment. E.g. for business the words are: office, payment terms, letter of intent, consignments, delivery, letter of credit, contract, mutual agreement and so on.

However, he suggests one important tool, so easily available these days, the MP3 player, or the IPOD. Download the pronunciations of these words, link them to your base language, and install them into your MP3. You can play them on the bus, while waiting for the taxi, or for a meeting, or at night while you are sleeping. Start the emerging process tonight, and you may go to the above website to download the key Korean words. Join the Forum, and ask your questions, and the expert will give you the answers.

Happy learning, go to South Korean forum for how to learn to write and speak Korean.

Wendy speaks and reads 11 languages at age eight.

Imagine how many more languages she will be able to converse in at age 21.

Even so, if you can observe carefully, only the Arabic and Vietnamese dialogue persons are different, because the Vietnamese is a man's voice, most probably Wendy's father, and the Arabic woman teacher has deeper tone than the rest. Note that the mother is not proficient in Vietnamese, leaving to the father to do that part.

It is Wendy's mother, she gave herself away when she said "Mama ...". Wendy's mother besides being her dad's assistant could be the linguist. She spoke Cantonese flawlessly and eloquently, like she is from Hong Kong. Many Hong Kong residence learn third language, and the most popular one is Japanese. This is due to the number of Japanese companies setting up their factories overseas, and the number of Japanese tourists visiting the country. Most Japanese are inept with the English language, and worst off in Cantonese. If you are in Hong Kong, you must speak Cantonese to get things done more quick, and talk to man-on-the-street without any barrier. Just speculating.
