Many sellers know Japanese markets are famous for its particular and high quality demand.

So they said, when they deal with Japanese buyers, they quote higher price, it seems they would earn big profits on that order, but finally, they found it left little profits. Because Japanese buyers are very particular about the quality and every detail, including all kinds of safety certificate requirements. They inspect the goods very strict, and the goods have to be remade or improved again and again before delivery.

I knew this fact many years ago. But I didn’t have so many chances to deal with Japanese buyers. So I don’t exclude Japanese buyers, because I feel they are serious and cautious. But this is good business attitude.

One month ago, I got to know a Japan buyer.

At the beginning, he asked me to source some electronic products.

He also sincere said,
“Do not worry, we will place order. And we have no intention to use you as an info desk (we do not know anybody in China). We want to work with you with many projects and hope that you can be a good sourcing agent for us. We would like to have mutual and 'long term' business relationship.”

Because one of the main products we handl are electronic products. So it is easy for me to source these items. I provided him with all the information he needed immediately, he agreed the prices, confirm the order quantity and other details. But we had the problem with the payment way. He wanted to pay by paypal, but we didn’t have paypal account, so I suggested him to pay to my Australia associate’s paypal account.

When we solve the paypal problem, he cancelled the order due to some reasons.

He said as follows:

“This has nothing to do with payment, or your reputation/references. As i said, the pen are of good quality, but trouble with FM. May be the wire system, or the many mountainous parts of cities in Japan is causing trouble regarding FM reception signals. But in the end, customers were not happy, even tough the mp3 was working very well. So please, your reputation is not at stake here. Just trying to look for something else, that we could do in the next step to break the ice.”

He asked me to recommend him other products we sell, he will check the possibilities of the cooperation. I provided him with some more products. And he chose one model- aluminum laptop tables. He is very glad to see such a useful product. So when we went further some details, he found he has the problem with the Japan customs about this product. Japan customs ask 22% tax when buyers import home furniture. He found little profits to import them.

He felt awkard, as he didn’t want to waste my time again. And he really wanted to start the cooperation with me on some projects. He felt I am a reliable person to deal with and I think I gave him the good impression.

I continued to offer him some more nice items including the fashion laptop bags. He and his partner are quite interested in them and also worked on this product hard.

I reminded him about any safety certificate of the bags required.

At that time, he didn’t realize it would be a big hamper due to the certificate. We went further and further. he finally chose the designs after he visited some customers. When we finally settle the sampling order, he said to me as follows:

“A medium size wholesaler and few shops told my wife that they would not be interested in no certification products. According to them, non certified goods have "no commercial value" and no market potential here in Japan, and no responsible shop or wholesaler would even try to handle non certified goods. The same is for toys, consumers electronics, shoes..... except few areas.”

And my business partner told me to give up Japan markets. He said, although the buyer may be willing to pay to get the safety certificate. But they are quite particular about every detail. It will give you a lot of troubles, it will spend you many times and efforts, even you will lose money at last.

I just felt depressed. This is not about I work in vain after so many efforts and times, but the problem is that I found it is so hard to sell to Japan markets, even I tried my best to cooperate. Even I sell to USA, UK, France, it is still much easier than sell to Japan.

Maybe someday I will sell to Japan markets successfully and smoothly when I am ready!

Sometimes,It is hard to sell products to Japan market. But sometimes,it is relatively easy to do.

If we want to do it well,we must know the products well and must be familiar with the  rules and regulations into the goal market.

At the time of the beginning,we should recommend the suitable products to our customers, thus we will not waste our time and efforts.

Good luck!

I feel It was not that your efforts were misguided, it was your buyer who was doing or i say trying to do something that he was not confident about or doesnt know sufficent enough.
Its allways that a weaker member of the team drags the whole team. In your case he was passing you hardwork without doing his. IF he just wants to buy from china and sell to some trader he should know what traders are buying not what is his personal choice or what his wife likes. Instead of choosing from what you are offering.
Anather way is that you do his home work and offer him products after reasearching what is selling in the market , basically identify what is the talk of the town
theses days internet makes it so easy you dont have to look for customer you have to fight for him.
REMEMBER JAPANESE CUSTOMER ARE VERY SENSITIVE AND LOYAL CUSTOMERS. LOOK AT ANY OF THE BRANDS AND SEE HOW THERE BRAND HAS STABLE MARKET SHARE.
TO GET A CUSTOMER TO BUY IS DIFFICULT BUT ONCE YOU GET INTO HIS GOOD BOOKS HE WILL GO ALL THE WAY TO DO THINGS FOR YOU

Im in Japan. Doing business in Japan is complicated but there are the shortcuts. Chances are the company or companies you were dealing with is a professional wholesaler or a company who are dealing with buyers whom they have to give full service to such as 1st class quality goods, credit terms, and returns on goods which are bad quality etc..

In order for them to succeed they have to meet the outlet buyers needs in terms of quality details and after service terms. Also as these products are non branded or original branded the japan buyer must be also calculating his competitiveness against similar products with brand names on them.

Electronics is one of the hardest markets here in Japan. Most customers would not buy a electronic here in japan imported from china unless the store or outlet we buy them from offers the after service or repair service. Basically short term use electronics are not yet here common in which you say you pay for a 100$ digital camera and expect to use it for 1-2 years and buy another one.

Customers here still like to buy products for a longer term use. As alot of Japanese brand name companines are now making their electronic parts from other countries the quaulity of electronics sold in Japan has gone down. no longer are the products lasting as long as they should and as these companies want the customers to upgrade they are purposely (in my opinion) downgrading the quality. But as the consumer still sees say sony, or panasonic , etc.. they would choose this over a non branded product.

If you want to sell in Japan its very easy. But it cost time, money and energy to sell into Japan. You have to understand the Japanese Market is not like European and Western very easy to deal with just in one common language of English. make a product , put instructions in english and sell to english speaking buyers walla and your rich.

In order to sell to Japanese you have to understand Japanese deal and feel comfortable with their own kind of people. Take example of selling foreign cars. All the companies contact toyota, etc.. dealers and say sell my car with your outlets. Its not easy because the Japanese distribution has to make sure he can give after service, qualitly etc... just as he does with his own Japan brand name cars.

For big companies with big products or volume my advice is to take the approach of settting up your own distribution net work. Do it directly is the best way to enter this market. As you enter you understand the details of the system which help you work around and improve yourself. Example docomo Japan had the distribution rights of blackburry phone for over 1-2 years before google came out. The Blackburry phone is still a top class brand smartphone. But what did docomo do? Kept the rights by paying a fee or have some agreements , and sold a minimum qty thus protecting their own phone market . Only offering the phone to busines clients. So what happen to the rest of the regulaur people. very poor thinking. While iphone came in and is top now in Japan because of probably their style of agreement with Softbank which is the 3rd player and is hungry to grow.

You can apply it to any single item. Just have to have the ideas of how to deal in Japan. By the way Im not Japanese.

Good luck to everyone for Japan Market.
