Post 1 of 15

During Past few weeks, MNCs have been subject of unfriendly remarks regading posts on Trips, WTO, level playing field etc. in different forums.

With agressive equisitions, take overs and collaborations worldwide, quite a few indian Industrial houses are emerging as global players ([em2] Friendly reference for MNC). Tata, UB Group, Mittals, Birlas, etc are just a few.

As an Indian or otherwise, what thoughts come to your mind to see indian MNCs emerging on the horizon.

Give your views and and reasons.Best answer gets 50MVPs and other good answers also stand to gain MVPs later.

Definitely good to hear about Tata -Corus long awaited deal or L.N. Mittal, Vijay Malya (the liquor king) deal Kingfishers airlines and other. Apart from it, There are various Brands which are not known to common man but are established in International Market for example Gajra is the well known Brand for Gears.

Replying to [sixer]:Yes! very true. Both are based at Dewas. And one more unit of Dewas has proved its significance Ranbaxy. (although there are varius units scattered across India)

Well for your info, G.G. Automotive Gears Pvt. Ltd. (A sunsidiary of Gajra Gears producing Gears for railway) was the first to supply its products to General Motors & General Electrics. And ABB Engine (Locomotive) launched in India and the Gear was from GGAG.

Your question is somewhat nationalist and for the Indians to answer, to me I felt this is rather racist, but I know you meant well and can't blame you. This may be due to your persepective of business.

This is similar to the question on "Is Globalisation Good or Bad?" I will try to give it a shot here.

Domestic markets are the nest place for Multi National Corporations (MNC), they must first establish themself locally first before going abroad. For the International Market is a different ball game, and level playing field altogether. The crucial consideration is focused on the Business type and value-addition to the product. For example, if a trading company wants to become a MNC, they have to make their own brands and to compete with a world wide field of players in the market.

The other type of business for instance, the manufacturing of motor vehicles by TATA. The strategy will be based on quality vehicle with the best safety and beautiful interior seats and features such as power windows, ABS brakes, four wheel drives facility, GPS navigation guides, air conditioning, heating and ventillation system, child safety door locks, powerful engines, fuel economy, and reverse proximity alarms, and secure locks.

This playing field has the Germans, French, Italian, Korean, American, British, Japanese and Chinese competitors.

I think it will be good for a company like TATA to go worldwide and have MNC, where they can set up assembly plants in some places. This will give TATA advantage to save hugh transportation costs by just shipping the parts. Some of the components may be outsourced from the location.

However the standard of technology and quality must be maintained, and TATA should have a Research and Development based in the advanced country for this technology. TATA has also to work closely with the Universities and Technology Institutions and grant scholarships to students to take in the best graduates.

Dear Street Smart,

Your thoughts are valuable and you have given good insight for TATA to emerge stronger on certain strengths it needs to imbibe.

Following is reproduction of reply I just posted on Community Discussions forum on same topic

"Dear Foow, I had a purpose to specify Indian MNCs.

Because, for some inexplicable reasons, MNCs in the past were accused of exploiting India, making an easy target for financial mismanagement cover up by politicians and as Capitalism personified by Trade Unions."

As m bought their brands loyaly, they did not appreciate MNCs, a situation which was puzzling me that if MNCs are bad, why poeple buy their products?Because they bought brand , not product.

Most Bizzare example. EVEREADY is market leader, but Union Carbide(Company-MNC) is target of ridicule because of what happened in Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 1984.
