Define Cheap?

Expensive does not necessarily means good quality. As we all kown the driving force of price is basically on supply and demand. If the demand for a particular goods is higher than the supply, the pressure will be to a higher price increase.

However other factors have also contribute to higher or lower prices beside the quality and reliabilty of the merchandise, brand name. Behind the brand name, there are a host of supporting factors, such as marketing costs, customer service, overheads and operating costs. If the product is set at such a high price than the other products of similar quality and ranking, the pressure will be driving the price downwards if there is lesser demand for the product.

On the same note, low priced products of the same standard will eventually flood the market and destroy the markets of the product category. This leads to companies shut down, retrenchments and loss of employment and lower purchasing power.. somewhat a lose-lose situation. Governments will have to step in and impose a restriction quota, or tariff on the imported goods, which is the anti-dumping law.

Kil,
I will use glass as an example. I can show you a very nice looking sheet of glass that has a high price tag. If the glass itself has minute flaws in it, or was produced using a poor quality of raw materials it may be that during cold winter the glass will shatter because of the poor material. To me that is a CHEAP piece of gl *... even though it is expensive to buy.

Furniture is also a very good example. Might look good and have nice finish, but if the joints are made badly then it is still a Cheap piece of furniture.

Lets take this example:

Company A from US sells X for 12$USD per pcs

Company B from China sells X for 6$USD per pcs

-------

Usually, Xs with Made in USA are OVER-engineered.
For example, sufficient thickness is 2 mm, but, they make 3 mm. This means if I buy X from USA, it means I am paying extra money for extra 1 mm that I will never use. So, I prefer Chinese product with 2 mm. The less payment and it is optimized engineering product. I am not fool to pay extra $6 for SO-CALLED quality (just OVER-engineering) product.

I keep seeing it and seeing it all the time in the forums. Cheap products are a threat to this country or that country. If an item is made cheap meaning it is not of good quality the company may see a brief influx of money but then consumers will become aware and not re-buy from them.

Example:

Company A from US produces 24Kms brake pads for 12$USD per pair

Company B from India produces 24Kms brake pads for 8$USD per pair

Company C from China produces 24kms brake pads for 6$USD per pair

It doesnt mean any of them are cheaply made it could be nothing more than the margin of profit, cost of raw materials, manufacturing process, and labor. If you can't compete on price or better quality than you need to find other products or markets where you can or improve the quality.

If your trying to break into a market doesn't it make good sense to sell cheaply at amargin and as name brand recognition gains, slowly increase your profit margin. Its just good business.

Best regards,

Ranger
