Do you know why the hamburger is not ham, but beef, called hamburger? .. because it was first made by Germans in Hamburg.

Why the sausage is frankfurter? Introduced first by the Germans in Frankfurt. The Germans are the best maker of sausages and smoked ham, and in one particular region, called Westfalen (Wesphalia) where the delicacies originate, such as:

  • Potato pancake (Pickert)
  • Grúnkohl und Kohlwurst
  • Westfalisher Schinken
  • Mopkenbrot bread
  • Rumpsteak
Embeded below is a list of the German cuisines found in the various German towns and cities. There are foreign food introduced such as the Hungarian Goolash, the Turkish kebarbs, and the Italian piezza.

Well, I have a question. The thing is that whenever I ate Chinese food, I liked it. But we have to remember that it was adapted to Western taste, even if it was prepared by Chinese cooks. So I don't really know how similar or not the perception of "delicious" is when it comes to comparing Asian and European people. Those of you who have been to Western countries, what do you think?

Hi Grandpa,

Thank you for being the first to write a post in response to my opening thread on this subject.

You may have known, I have travelled to Europe, the middle east, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia, along with the other parts of South East Asia on many occassions, because of business, not on tour or sighseeing.

I am also privileged to meet people of different cultures and nationalities, of certain perculiar habits and character. Also I have tasted the food, breath the air, and felt the atmosphere of the country.

You may categorise food of various nationalities by their stable food. For the Asian it is rice and wheat noodles as their stable food, and for the Europeans it is the bread and potatoes as their stable food.

What is meant to be delicious for one, may be obnoxious for the other, and as to my experience in South Korea, I do not like KIMCHI, but the Koreans cannot live without it.

Even for the Germans, people in Hamburg has different likings of food as those living in Nuremburg for example, I have been to Hamburg and went on to the Exhibition there. We ate hotdogs and some Chinese food in the Chinese restaurants, but on occassions, we went to the Germany counter to have our meals, which were reasonable in price and filling to our stomach.

The striking things about Germany is the beer and the sausages and ham. When I travelled on a train to Turinger, Erfurt, the Eastern part of Germany, after the Union, I could sense a remarkable contrast between former West Germany and the East, the buildings, the people, the culture and many of the Easterners could not speak English. And what more?  the food. On the train, I asked for Ein Americanish Frustruck, which consists of fried eggs, coffee and sandwitches.

The message is: we tend to go into a SAFE MODE, just like when our WINDOWS crash, and when travelling overseas, like in Japan, I would speak Japanese and asked for SANDOWICHI that is sandwitch, or GOHAN, that is rice. There is no time for delicacies, because it is risky, and very expensive.

In Nuremburg, we have beer, and it is in October, where the OCTOBERFEST was on, there are all kinds of beer. I drank a glass which is about 30 cm high, of a dark brown beer, it tasted superb. We have steak, or fish fillets, and sausages. Then there was one occassion, all three of us Asians were in a little town called Saarbruken, where a company which produces an Engine monitoring safety equipment was located. The people in the hotel could not understand English, our only language of communication, and they had a young girl, who speaks the language. So we ate at the restaurant in the inn, and when it came to collect the bills, they would call the name of this girl to speak to us, then I replied to her in German, reading from the Dictionary. The meat was very delicious, and the bread of rye and pepper mixed, was our first experience to take such bread.

Hi Street. Thanks for your detailed description! So the bottom line seems to be that German food might be strange for the Asian palate, but not unplesant. Did I get that right?

No. Not agree! Indeed many Asian already know well about German food, especially the sausages, the white and the red ones, plus salami, bloody and meat-loaf, smesh potato and the potato paste. I remember when I was in Pforzheim, I was treated in the the restaurant next to the River(name forget) to have the fish dishes. There were four very big ponds keeping various kinds of fish with the tube to input the river water into them. And customers can choose what they like. And the chef cooked immediately right after you chose.

Can you imagine, sitting under the old trees and viewing the river next to your table , enjoying the fresh air from the forest , mild sun-shine, eating the fish with the white wines, chatted from the old till today matters , either business or girls. So much pleasant and relaxed. Oh I love it!![em10]

Ok, I only said that they _might_ find the taste strange, but not necessarily. And of course everybody enjoys that peace under the trees you are talking about. - In fact, I also enjoy the kind of relaxing environment you describe, and would like to find it here in Mexico. And ask Tiger what he thinks about that. He is from Germany, too...

That must be the Rhine River, there are lots of good restaurants there.

By the way, Tiger was from the Black Forest, near the Swiss and Austrian borders. Probably the speciality is not the sausages and the blood meat.

Love Germany to its extreme, during our tour of Germany under the guide of our hosts, our principal, we came to a bridge, and I saw a bigger than life size of a statue of Jesus Christ. The scene was so imprinted on my brain, that picture of His face, looks exactly like the paintings of the Lord Supper by Leonardo Da Vincci, and the imprint on the Turin shroud in Northern Italy.

It was good experience, we went to a shop selling some articles, and there was a pen with a picture of a girl on the top part. If you tilt the pen one way, this girl is dressed in swimsuit, and the other way, undresses her. There were some Indonesians, and one particular elderly man bought half a dozen of the pens. The Sales girl remarked "All the girls? How about getting the boys."

Chen, I wonder what the fish in the pond might be thinking. When the cook comes along with the net, it may say "don't eat me, I am too skinny, and too small, choose the fat one." it may live for another day.[em3]

Street,

"don't eat me, I am too skinny, and too small, choose the fat one."  I loved so much of your words! Really some time the humor is created and trained by opposite thinking and observations and deep thought of using too. [em19][em17][em16][em20][em14][em2][em3][em10]

Well, the Black Forest is closer to the Swiss and French border, but they love good food just as well. Just have a look at their cherry cake you presented to us!

Sometimes I have the impression that Germans enjoy good food and a relaxing environment even more than sex, and don't think they don't love that! [em3]

Leosun, please don't tell that poor fish, but nowadays many people are on a diet and prefer "skinny"... [em3]
