Importing an electrical item from China to the UK, CE marking required?
Post 1 of 9

Calling all import / CE Mark gurus!!

I'm looking to import a lighting product in to the UK. The product consists of a metal reflector which houses is a porcelain light bulb holder. The bulb holder itself is CE marked and my supplier has the CE mark certificate to back this up. My question is, will the product as a whole pass CE marking requirements if the main electrical component has been submitted for testing and approved?

Your help / advice would greatly be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mark Brickstock

Mark, you can check my reply to this question in the other forum, also to add to that you can check the Rohs list here : http://resources.alibaba.com/topic/303371/RoHS_catogy_list_1_10_does_your_products_need_the_test_.htm

you know more if the product is to be used for commerical or private use, electronic parts used or electrical parts that are highlighted within the Rohs restricted list, like solder and mercury switches are most common to fail, and maybe the material/parts used on your product may already have passed the certification that have been supplied from other suppliers to make your product.

I would claim to be an CE expert, but here is what I know. If you say only the holder is has the CE certication that means only the housing of it have passed the CE certification. The whole light is required to pass the whole CE certication.  ( As I am sure you know, a light is basically splited into light housing, lighte source and power supply) Only the housing getting the CE mean the light fixture, what you are trading have only a third of the CE.

I hope it is helpful to you.

Good luck

For any member interested in importing from China to the EU or its EFTH member states, I have set out the legal process for CE marking conformity here:

http://resources.alibaba.com/topic/313305/CE_conformity_importing_electrical_products_into_EU_.htm

A key point is that the importer must hold a highly technical File establishing that the product does in fact conform with EU Directives and underlying EN Standards. This file must be held for up to 5 years after the product is last sold in the EU or its 3 EFTH member states (in those cases where the manufacturer does not have an Authorised Representative in EU holding the File, as is the case with most Chinese manufacturers).

However, the substance of that file will not be questioned by EU authorities if the lab which tested the product is a "Notified Body" lab whereas other labs may come into question. Notified Boby labs are directly appointed by EU Governments to test products and issue conformity certificates.

Sorry i have to reply to you hear as the other is locked!

If you ask me first before telling others i have been on a one day course? its was just 4 hrs a week and over 12mths, i am not the one for one day cources, the help was just to test his product to make sure its safe! and i am ok to do that, have i said the wrong thing?

As for me not understanding much about CE, i don't want to get in to this, other than we have applied for our own for 5 products and dealing with other people that had problems before, anyway the poster wanted help and i replied,

Please reply and let me know where you can get this one day course for 2377- 001 and 2377-002, as with most long term course the fail rate is 10-15% just wonder after just a few hours being given 200 multiple questions within 1hr per test what the fail rate is here.
