Relations between China and Japan have undergone "historic change", China's vice foreign minister said Thursday, a day after the two sides partly resolved a long-running spat on gas fields.

"Speaking about China-Japan relations, particularly after President Hu Jintao's visit, a sea change has taken place, historic change, in my view," Wu Dawei told reporters.

Speaking a day after and announced they would jointly develop some gas fields in the
East China Sea
, partly resolving a dispute between the two, Wu said relations were at a "new starting point."

The traditional rivals have recently been working to repair relations which have long been tense due in part to the legacy of Japanese imperialism.

Hu even paid a landmark visit to Japan last month -- only the second by a Chinese head of state to .

But Wu warned there were still areas of dispute in which 's position remained unchanged, including the thorny issue of the Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea, currently controlled by but also claimed by .

"We should not rush to settle the issue because if we rush to a resolution, either by or , then there will only be one possible solution, that is a non-peaceful solution," Wu said.

In a further sign that the Diaoyu islands remained a controversial issue, Chinese nationalists demonstrated Wednesday outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing, urging to "get out of the Diaoyu islands."

The protest suggested public opinion might not be in line with government efforts to patch up ties with , but Wu said the Chinese people supported friendship with
Tokyo
.

"I'm confident that we can surely reach the goal of having our people living together in friendship for generations to come."

Happy that it is going into the right direction too.....

The sharp and poignant contrast  formed by Japanese political government is inexplicable and mysterious. Maybe it proved that only development and strong can gain respect from others. But in my shallow point of view, respect is mutual and most of Chinese are forgiving and tolerant, we appreciate peace, harmony and friendly relations with Japan, that's the win-win situation that we longed for ages. May it KEEP the momentum.

I am impressed, Kat, your english expression and word used is excellent, Where did you learn your english. [em16]

Don't be restricted by the grammer, and I think a lot of Chinese would like to participate in the forum unless they're not busy at the work.

You should encourage that. I have noticed that lately, lots of people have dropped out. I do not know if it is because of lack of confidence of their command of english or otherwise. Or we are all getting bored.

If it is with regard to english, I think most of the contributors here are very nice. I have yet to see anyone criticising anyone because of their english. In fact despite the no so correct english usage, many still feel oblige to reply or response to the post. We should maybe find some way to get more participation.

China has such a huge population and it is indeed strange to see so few people joining this forums. Even the forum on China is not doing well with chinese participants.

I am not a racist and have nothing against any other nationalities. In fact, I think given that there are so many foreigners in this forums, it is a good place to learn and to teach. A good cultural exchange avenue.

Completely right and correct! With such huge population in China, the more our Chinese people can learn and keep improving the English, to pick up one by one and day by day, the less misunderstanding about foreigners and other countries , then conflictys will be much less. This is the only key that will help you to succeed. Do mind other people to laugh at us, because we are not bron in English speaking, we make mistakes; it is very normal. If we know well, we still need to continue the studies and learning without stop.[em17][em3]

May be Alibaba has to promote more about the International web-site and attract more people to come here for more experiences share and exchanges, learning and teaching, also dig more and more valueable idea![em18][em19][em17][em8][em8]

This reminds me of somebody I met months ago in another forum. In the beginning he only posted emoticons (showing that he had understood corrrectly), but never wrote a word in English.

One day the mod told him to either write real texts, or his posts would be deleted. So he started writing, and his English was much better than what we had expected after seeing his shyness.

I don't know if this is typical for Chinese or even Asian people in general, but I can say that nobody in his right mind will scold or offend anybody for not being perfect.

So just go ahead, express yourself as well as you can, try to continue learning, and forget about what a scoffer might think or say! They are a very, very small minority anyway! [em19] [em19]
