Why are Chinese companies so hard to deal with?
Post 1 of 13

[em6] Ok, for the past 2 months I have been talking to people in China regarding the Minerals we have for sale. It has become extremely frustrating working with anyone from China, as they forget what you had just talked about the previous day, or use the "I dont understand" excuse when they were meant to do something for you, example - Sign a contract or continuously repeat that we have a good price, then out of nowhere they start saying oh your price is to high, then the next day they say its a good price.

This isnt just one company, its everysingle company I have dealt with there, roughly 10.

Does anyone have any solutions to overcome this?

Are you sure they are all good and real buyers for you? Where you source them? [em9]

Dear Ninja,

we are Chinese company.  we often buy copper ore and lead ore from oversea countries. Actually, we often meet the problems whether supplier can send the goods to us on time after signing the Contract and opening LC.  Now some african suppliers can't send goods to us after opening the LC. they only use it to get loan from their local bank. finally we didn't get nothing. so  I think every buyer want to find the stable supplier and set up the long term  business cooperation. maybe  one or two shipments.  you can  do quick action for other goods.

Otherwise, I want to know whether you can supply copper ore in stock now?can you supply the specification of  copper ore? how many Mts do you have in the warehouse? How much is the price FOB basic port in Chile or CIF xingang? we can load them by Full container. furthermore, we have one agent in Chile. they can help us to check goods. If you have interest in business cooperation, you can send email to me. My email: dennyzhang337@yahoo.com.

looking forward to your reply and wish you good luck

best regards

Denny

Chinese incompetence question...

Oh that's very sad to hear. Do they keep whinning even after the contract is signed and money transferred?

Looks like your situation is similar to marketing people relations. They seem to be doing some marketing research before the actual buying so they probably check out other suppliers and sometimes others give them better price or better service. But seems like after a while the "others" decline or some negative aspects arise and the marketing people return to you. Looks like ordinary marketing stuff. In other countries there's a better business etique: marketing people never give promises they warn you that they need ur prices for marketing research for probable future purchase.

First find out a company who is genuine by going through their profile. The direct manufacturers /mills deal reasonably.Because they want to produce highly economical products, their bargain for raw materials prices will also be equally tough. Traders especially those who want to transfer L/Cs would like to bargain enormously  .The sanctity for the contract is also very limited in mineral business. Convincing them for 100% at sight payment is another problem as they always look for 100% CIQ analysis payment or atleast 90+10%. This is out of insecurity and many failures. The mutual understanding and "who will blink first" depends on market demand and their own risk taking ability.

Dear Ninja,

We are a chinese company. We export. When i negotiate with the foreign customers, i come across the same situation. The customer just say the price is high or so. But actually, it is not high at all. I believe it is a kind of strategy to do business. It is the same all over the world, not just chinese. You can try people from other countries, you will find the same thing in them. Good luck!

I would agree it's often hard to deal to chinese companies and the matter is not in trading strategy. I think Ninja means it's often hard to get clear information, to get quick responses to your questions, to exchange USEFUL information that is to keep on dialog, to discuss in a constructive way, to find out likes and dislikes etc. When it's about european suppliers/buyers, this dialog is constant, clear and at the end you can clearly understand what the client needs and why you can or cannot cooperate. In case with chinese companies, one can spend huge amount of time and still have no clear image of your communication; whether you're approaching to the final decision about cooperation or not . Very often chinese company staff doesnt speak good english and it's hard to discuss details, also often provided information doesnt correspond to what you expected to, and quite often ther is no any knwoledge about papers necessary for international trading. I dont want to offend anybody , I also met HIGH PROFESSIONAL companies in China and at the moment am in contact to a few companies which provide rarther good business communication but it's still hard to find a company of this level.
