Could someone advise me on CE certification into Europe. Re Bicycles for instance being imported into the UK  Must they have without fail a CE certification to comply with European standards?

I imagine they do as safety standards are high in the UK which is a good thing, but I would like to make sure. Bicycles without CE I assume cannot be brought in?

CE is the min needed to import bikes to the UK, but you may find that not all testing labs would be fine for the customs in UK to be happy with, they would like to make contact if needed and not direct to China, so use a local office within UK.

This is where you best to choose CE with SGS, there are many labs testing now for CE, some buyers would have the product tested in UK themselfs and then use the model numbers to import these products.

The sysytems in China do forget the points for the CE when making products sometimes, make sure the CE mark is well sell on the Carton, all documents, like the manual, and on the products, you can fix a label to the bikes with CE.

Make sure the CE is sent to you, check the name on the front and match to the factory, many suppliers would use other suppliers CE's you would only hit problems if the customs are not happy.

You can ask for the CE final report, here you would see more data for the testing and pictures of the products and specs.

If SGS you can check with the Shanghai office giving them the test number and they would verify the certification for you, it is known some would edit the CE, so you must be careful.

If the bike has any electronic you may need to have the Rohs certification also, as SPORTING GOODS may come under your products, this test for all EU countries and not all suppliers would have this due to the high costs of the report.

Check well and don't wait till the UK customs stop your goods at the port, if this is the first time you will import, you need to be VAT reg, if not you have to get a temp number to import goods to UK, this number can be left open for further imports until you reach the max limit and apply for Vat reg, you would not be able to claim back vat back.
