Jatropa - the miracle crop
Post 1 of 21

Jatropha, I called it the miracle crops. My pick as a crops for Bio-Fuel years back during my stay in Cambodia.

A crops that for years people ignored and uses only at fence hedges or at most as medical herbs.

Years back, some wise government has encourage the growth of this crops as a community project to generate bio fuel to be use as fuel for their farm generators or motor.

But I think Jatropha deserved to be promoted and laud for it usefullness.

Jatropha is easy to plant, 3 months is all it need to produce some full. 1 years and it is near maturity. each seed is capable to produce 30%-40% of oil.

Cost of production is minimum. Seedling is cheap (less then 1 USD/kg).

Land for growing is even easier to find. Unlike other crops that required good rainfall, fertile ground, regular fertilising, Jatropha grow in any environment. In fact, Jatropha is most productive in environment of low rainfall, arid condition, even in loose soil ground.

Compare to Palm, which can be harvested minimum after 5 years, Jatropha can start to generate income within a year.

Farmer can start planting in farm that is rejected by most crops. Land can therefore be fully utilised.

There are much, much more that can be say about this miracle crops, anyone can feel free to contact this contributor or check the web for more information.

It is time we promote it by giving our view.

I am in total agreement. All I have researched about Jatropha indicates that it is an excellent plant for biodiesel. In fact I have been going crazy trying to find real suppliers and not frauds in Nigeria, Cameroon, India and China but so far I have struck out. Two in Nigeria, Oil Images and Mr Texaco will not give me any of their customer's contact information that I might check to see how they feel about doing business with them. I will be posting about such frauds as I find them out.

I do wish for you to contact me. I am relatively new in the forums and I don't know how much info I am allowed to give here but my contact info is (no contact info please) Please mail me asap with any legitimate companies you know that I might do business with them. I truly am at my whits end about honest suppliers of Jatropha oil or biodiesel.

I hope I won't get in trouble for sending this ,this way.

Dear Jim,

It might be still wee bit of problem getting supplier of Jatropha oil or even the seed.

Most that are growing this crops are having it for their own consumption. Thailand, Indonesia, India and Mali and other are beginning to grow this in large scale but the demand still far outstripped the supply.

I have been trying to get people to consider Cambodia and Indonesia as a cropping ground because there are lots of land in these countries that is not been utilised due to the misunderstanding that this ground is worthless. This is were I hope people will help to convince investor or even the government to explore the posiibility of Jatropha farming.

I do have a friend in Indonesia who is planting this in very large scale and I will introduce him to you.

And just for clarification, I have reply here because I will like to have this forum as a springboard to highlight the Jatropha issue.

Yes, please do check the website.

The Indian has some very good information, but lately, there is lots more progress in this area.

The Indonesian has done a good job and may give some information about their crops.

China Hainan Island also grow this crop, but I think that may not be the most conducive place to plant this crop. There might be some good place to plant this crop in China, but always remember, this crops grow almost everyway, but it take the right climate and soil condition for it to produce the best quality fruit and also more harvesting. I have forgotten to add. In a good environment, you can get more then 1 harvesting per year.

Do your research and join in this promotion. This poor man crop need to had it profile raised.

Price varies according to market demand. The cost of producing a litre of Jatropha bio diesel is only about 20-30% of the fossil fuel diesel at present market rate.

With the present environemental awareness and the  Carbon Credit issue going on, the are client who are willing to pay more for bio diesel rather the fossil diesel.

Extraction of oil is simple, yes, a a normal oil extractor is sufficient. In fact, the African, Cambodian and some Indian villages are using the most primitive tool to press for oil.

But, in order to maximise the produces, it is best to use machines that can be most efficient. Also the Jatropha cakes (after oil has been pressed) can be use as fuel for burning, they produces lest pollution than coal.
