I was fired from my job solely because I asked for a performance raise. Is this legal and, if not, what is my recourse against this employer? Thanks for your time.

Not trying to condemn you, but I think there is always 2 sides to a coin. Many of us are jumping into conclusion the boss is at fault and are trying to find means of getting back. But could it be, like someone in this forum comment, it could be wrong timing. Or could it be worse, the boss have mean to fire you.
It would be advisable to revaluate our performance and to see if we have not being performing up to the company requirement.
It is always easy to find fault with other and not ourself, why? that is because we have been living with ourself all this years. Once you begin to accept yourself fully, it might be hard to find fault with yourself.
So, may I conclude, with the few statement you written, we can't be too presumptious.

I don't know your country's laws. I suggest a free 1st time legal counsel. Ask...
You should take this insulence from your emplyer as a learning experience. The next time you want to ask for a raise, you should have already found another job offer and or opportunity as a back up plan.
I would seek other employment. Do an interview. If offered the job and the terms are better than your current position with your present employer. Then you can go ask for a raise. If they fire you... it is of no matter. You already have another job waiting for you. Sometime you can use the new employer as leverage to force your employer to offer you more pay if they need you so much.
Remember this... employers are very much like dictaitors. They tell you what to do. If you make a problem for them (such as raising their labor costs) they will cut your throat. The best way to deal with these dictaitors is to prepare to fire them. Cover you buttocks. Always have a back up plan.
Finally, Relying on ones' self is honorable and powerful feeling.

That's really too bad for you. How come that your employer didn't even evaluate your performance? you might be really needing a raise if you think that you have exceeded their expectations. And how do they appraise you as an employee? Maybe they do not have enough funds to give you a raise, and they would just hire another to cut costs. I wouldn't really know if this is legal, but to get you fired solely on that ground, is very inhumane. They should have told you, No, without firing you.
