I want to see a couple of chinese company's samples for a folding camping chair worth about $10 ea.  They said they will send me one free but I will have to pay the shipping @ $150-$200!  Their chairs are not available in the US for me to source. Is this the customary procedure for aquiring samples?

Thanks...

Bear in mind that some chinese company's getting hundreds of requests to "send samples", without getting a follow up response. Many companies will ask you to pay for the delivery charges. Their response is not unusual.

Just make sure the delivery charges are in acceptable, you can give them your DHL/UPS account number and ask them to charge it on that.

Well, it's the standard procedures for them to safeguard their interest. The reasons being that there was too much "sample hunters" in the market. I'm a buyer myself and I ask samples from suppliers from China too and most of them hesitate to send me until I pay for the sample and freight fees.

So what I offered them is I would not pay for samples as I think it's part of their product campaign expenses; but only for the freight charges.

Quite customary to supply samples free of charge but Courier Fees should normally be paid by the Customer. You could ask them if they are prepared to re-emburse you for the costs off your first big order. A lot of Suppliers are prepared to do this,.

Chair 10 USD??? Freight cost to you +- 200 USD??? You think freight too high???? You might be right because if you pay this amount to them, freight cost might be less, either way they gain from you.Ofcourse prepaid courier cost is always cheaper. Goodluck

Can anyone help me with a similar question?

Well i am also about to buy some sample from a company in china ...im almost 100% sure that it is legit ...but for the sample they want:

$400 for the product (TV) and $180 for the shipping (DHL). is there any chance on this kind of product that i could get the actual product for free or anyway of lowering the cost?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

thanks

What is supplier do is right for you?  you get the sample from them is because you want to test their quality and evaluation, how possible to get the sample free!  and I think all cost is right and the supplier have given you the lowest price then can do.  if you told the supplier that you want it to be free or lowering, that would be not so willing to sell you their goods.  a real buyer should know all about this, it seems you just want to buy one for your own use, right?  and then disappear from that supplier.

As other have written... While a free sample of small value may seem reasonable for a legitimate buyer, my experience is that there are so many requests for free samples that it would cost ~10% of all export orders if we were to provide this.

My suggestion is to pay for the samples but to do this considering the following:

1) is sample unit cost reasonable?

2) is freight reasonable? [not just your opinion - get prices of sending a similar item to your sellers destination for comparison]

3) if pricing is loaded - is it to allow for reasonable administration costs?

4) would the company be prepared to discount your first order by the sample costs? Only consider this for further negotiation.

If 1, 2, 3 are not reasonable - you probably wouldn't want to do business with them.

Stay Diligent.[em15]

Too much sanple and delivery fee bundurn these company a lot, But samples
plays a very important role in foreign trade for evaluating quality, in order
to carry on business, you could seek free samples but pay delivery fee by
given Fed/DHL No.to your vendor.
