I am looking at making my 1st purchase from china a 20ft container with products. I want to know if there is insurance that I can purchase that will protect me against scams, or getting a container full of bricks instead of my product. I am located in the USA

Nope. But you have the option of a pre-payment inspection, and also the need to verify the buyer as legitimate.

Dear Sir
it's depend on which trems you choose if you accept FOB you should pay the insurance or CIF the seller will do it for you

In Alibaba advertise teh A I G , ask to them the possibility on it.
"some how that your supplier do not or violation or break promising"
Indeed, a pre-shipment inspection should be there and also the verification too.
Do a signed contract about it very clear in Prior.
But let it be Insuranced.
If not enough with it,
Briefly ask confirmation that is what such guaranty upon it ?
And you propose the stand by L/C or Full liquid Bank Guaranty For it ?
either ones as the counter of SAFETY PAYMENT & DELIVERY & QUALITY assurance.
