Dear Loyal:
I am a very freshman in international trade ,therefore ,I don't have any experience with the procedures neither on cross-nation trade nor the freight forwarding.I feel so headache about those terms of freight and no one in my company can teach me what to do and how to do.![]()
Here is my question:
Recently I receive the quotation inquiry based at CIFC5% ,usually our qoutation basis is FOB Taiwan .I read from books that FOB + I + Freight = CIF . So i have to ask forwarder for the insurance and ocean freight fees, right? Then What information shall I offer them for reference to work out a offer for me? If the order is small , less than a container , it is need to be consolidated .Is the term"consolidation" use for this situation? What are "door to door" and"LCL"?
Your kind reply would be very helpful!!!Thank you![]()

Actually most people these days confuse C&F with CIF so you got to verify if the buyer needs C&F quote or CIF do mention to him that it will add extra cost of insurance... CIF rate should include marine insurance for the goods... but normally this term is confused with C&F ...right..
Door to Door is when shipment is picked from supplier warehouse and delivered to consignee warehouse.. it's also known as warehouse to warehouse... Door to Door rate quote means charges include for transportation from shipper door to consignee door.. right.
Less than container load shipment are known as LCL though they are consolidated into a container... that can also be refered in shipping as consolidated cargo.... but normally trading people call it LCL

Hello, I am new to international trade and I have a few questions regarding shipping. I found a factory in china to supply me with the product I was looking for. The price i pay includes shipping via DHL. When they ship the items they ship them as a "sample". Will I have a problem with this down the road, and why would they ship them as a sample? I was also wondering do I have to do anything with customs or does DHL handle everything when they bring it into the US. Thanks for your time!

DHL act as your Customs Broker in this situation. All charges should be included in the original quote if you are having this done door-to-door with the exception of actual duty costs payable to the US Customs service.
However, your having ptoducts shipped as "samples" does carry legal issues with it. From the pov of US Customs a SAMPLE is non-resellable. If you take delivery and then resell it you are committing a Federal Craime and can be prosecuted like you wouldnl't believe..... Paying the duty is actually the far smarter thing to do in the first place if you intend to resell them.... Do you really want the Feds busting down your door and arresting you over a few bucks worth of duty costs? Pay the duty (DHL can tell you exactly how much this will be BEFORE you make the shipment by working with you and your supplier)
Another thing to consider: If this product is ELECTRICAL or a PHONE etc (ie if it has electricity running thru it) then you need to make sure it is LEGAL for the USA. A simple example is the iPHone "copy" from a company called CECT. That phone is illegal in the US as it does NOT have FCC certification. Many, many, many CHinese companies won't mention this small fact to you as the problem is not theirs but YOURS. Same goes for any electronics/ electrical goods. You need to have UL certification for the US,
Hope that gets you started and take your time getting it right BEFORE you start spending your money!

Hi,
I am Pavan i have a doubt regarding destination charges,
Recently we shipped a consignment to Kiev, Ukraine by sea the terms of delivery is CIP-kiev and it was a LCL Shipment later the shipper has sent a debit note to the buyer as "Destination Charges" and asking them to pay to move the shipment to destination now finally after much argueing we had to pay for it to avoid demurages Ok So now i would like to know as to ,how can i ensure that this does'nt happen in the future we have a lot of export shipments and it may repeat again, how do i ensure that this does'nt repeat again is there any way i can verify about these charges before, please advice
Thanks
