My client doesn't know any international terms! What can i do?
Post 1 of 22

I received his inquiry from ALIBABA a few months ago. After a few emails and calls,he would come to visit my factory. But later,he changed his mind because he wanted toorder one machine first for a trial. If the first machine would run well,he promised to purchase at least 20 sets each year.

First,we signed confidential agreements to protect our techanical drawings to beenclosedor used illegally. But he refused to sign the contract. He said he needed to consult his lawyer. My clientwas totally innocent to international trade.Ironically, his lawyer also knew nothing about external trade. He even asked what CIF Edmonton stands for?I suggested to my client that itwas much better to get advice from banks which can give him professional answers to his questions.

He was even worried about the deposit. At the beginning,he even mentioned that our company had better point an Canadian lawyer to hold the deposit. What the ****?[em9]

I invited him to come to China to inspect the machine before shipment.Until now,it is the best way which i can think of.We will deduct the round airfares from the total value .That means we will pay for the round-trip ticketsHowever. He seems uninterested.I have not received his reply yet .

here,i have a few questions about this clients. Please give me your advice.Any suggestion or comment ishighly appreciated.

1.Does this client really wanna make cooperate with our company?

2.I quoted to him.He even didn't negociate with me about the price.Usually, most of buyers asked me to low price. He didn't!

3.If you were me,what would you do?

4.Is there anyone from Canada?

I will come back to check your comments at times. In case i miss any comment, you guys are welcome to talk with me on MSN.Any comment is appreciated!

He replied: "Alex. We are willing to put the money in trust for the machine. We will not buy the unit until it is tested and proved on site in . Please contact my partner".

My question is : Does it mean that he will pay part of the total value and pay the rest later? what does "pay in trust for" mean?

I am looking forward to your kind reply.Thankeverybody in advance!

Yes, maybe he is innocent as you said,  he may want to order, but he won't actually cause he doesnot know the things well, he is anxious about many things, May he just want to check sth out, comparing the price etc.

There are many these kinds of customers in fact, just walk away and go on.

Hi Alex

Actually~ I have no Idea about your business area. But I think the business should be the samiliar .

A.1. You needn't worried about what's your customer like .Only do it .

A2. He never to bargaining with you .Maybe she accept the price that you  qutoe to him.

A3.There must be some regulations for the new customer  in your company. And the regulation can help your business go somthely meanwhile the regulation can protect us the manufactory.

Cecilia.

dear freind :

I'll gonna tell you about  the most powerful and succesful way to over come your problems and save time anf efforts.

be strong and direct enough to ask your dealer about his or her situation towards you .

you are the hunter ,it is a fact that any clever hunter is pointing directly at what he aims .

don't expect to have everything you want inside your hands without asking for it .

specify your turget and negotiate it as everything is legal and anounced .Don't hunt in "\

"no hunting area" because you will not enjoy hunting when you are hiding among thichness of jungle trees ,you will not concentrate on your aim .

therefore ,be specific ,direct and legal to feel trust and self-confidence when you are doing any deal ,thus you negotiate freely about all what you want.

pls, notice that hunter who is aiming to all perys will fail also, as this desire of woning all of them will make you lose your concentration also.

I think trading is hunting good chances so try to get it ,this is what OI think.

Hello Samtxd,  It is good to invite your client to your base for your business promotion only if it  is necessary.

2. Yes, your client might have good interest in your products all you need to do is send to him the brochures or pdf of your products and price quotation Once it is agreed by your client you go ahead and include your price condition i.e C.I.F or F.O.B or C & F etc all through your quotations and notify your  bankers for security purposes. You can visit your banker for details of International trade terms and Conditions. Please read regularly International trade forum Magazine publish by UNCTAD/WTO an arm of United Nation for World Trade Organization to update yourself from time to time on any international trading activities.it is free or visit their website to download it is free. I wish you well.

Alex, if a customer does not know the basics as far as terminology then my advice is not to be rude but also not to spend too much time on them.

Any serious customer with serious money to spend would invest their time to protect their financial investment by understanding the business before jumping into it.

It does not mean that you wont get an order from this customer, but I suspect that although his intentions may be true, at the end of the day he will find that it is just too difficult and he will give up on the idea. Perhaps he has already given up which would explain why he hasnt replied to your last contact.

Thank you,Egernia. It is really a great commend.

I admitted that there was a little joking around when i was talking about my client, just because it had bothered for a while. When i communicated with him via emails or phone,i showed him every courtesy.

As you said,i won't spend much time on him.But i will keep in touch with him.At least,If he would cancle the cooperation,i hope to know what makes him give up.

Egernia ,i read many posts you put. you have a good sense of international business. Most important, you've  helped a lot of people with that. That is why i wanna talk with you on Trademanager.(Unfortunately,i was rejected.[em4])

Alex[em18]

Do not waste your time on such buyers. You will meet more trouble if the buyer knows nothing about international trade terms. Actually this is impossible.

Alex - It appears that you did not do a background check on the company before moving into negotiations. From what you have described  that there was no sign the buyer was eager to do business with, the fact that he did not even negotiate on price or other term shows that he might not be interested or is trying to take advantage of your eagerness to sell the product. Learn about the company, do a background check, ask for references, contact appropriate government entity including Chamber of Commerce or others for verify. Until you do that, take no action.
