THE full horror of the devastating China earthquake began to emerge today as rescuers discovered whole towns all but wiped off the map, pushing the death toll well above 20,000.
Military and police teams punched into the heart of the disaster zone, with 100 troops parachuting into a county that was previously cut off while planes and helicopters air-dropped emergency supplies.
But the message that came back from this mountainous corner of southwestern Sichuan province was that town after town was flattened by the 7.9-magnitude quake that struck two days ago.
The death toll has soared well above 20,000, but that toll is rising by the hour as more information comes in from stricken communities.
Along with Grigo I also add my prayers to the people caught up in this disaster.
While none of "my" people are in that area, my thoughts go out to all those who may have famiies in the area.

Quoting from [grigo]:
The death toll in yesterday's earthquake in Southern China has now reached over 10,000. This follows the huge death toll in Burma following the cyclone.
Please leave your prayers for the victims below, no matter of what religious belief you are.
Our thoughts are with those who have survived and who have lost loved ones.
May Allah help them in this time of crisis.
Its a real catastrophe which has saddened the whole world.

It's been many a year since my tough ol' eyes watered a little.
On CNN tonight ... a Party Secretary in charge of rescue operation in his small town that got hit real hard ... CNN TV crew trotting behind him trying to keep up ... as he organised survivors and directed operations to rescue those buried alive ... a sole man doing one * of a top bloody good management job ... this guy was actually saving lives in real time there on the tube.
And, here I'd been thinking these past few years that today's Party Secretaries are a pretty useless breed (although my mother-in-law was a darn good one in the good old days).
But oh ... the TV crew finally cornered that Party Secretary for a few seconds of chat ... turns out his wife and his 2 children and both his parents had just been killed in this disaster.
Yeah that's when my eyes welled a little, when I saw a quick little tear come to his eye too ... but he quickly brushed his tear aside as he raced to continue his rescue management job!
My God! What admirable stuff is inside that man ... sorta restores my faith in humanity and in the Party system too ... how can one manage the town's rescue operation having just lost one's parents, wife and kids?
And, it sure puts paid to Chinese caring about nothing other than own family as I often hear them say "If my family is ok, everything is fine". There's a bit more humanity in China than these guys sometimes care to admit.
My thoughts and prayers go to the families of the dead and injured and to the many parents who lost their only child under China's one child system ... but the sight of that quick tear brushed aside by the man who had just lost all one can possibly lose as he jumped back into his rescue job will stay with me forever.
Well, he didn't quite lose all one can lose. He didn't lose his humanity! ![]()
CCTV (Chinese state-run ) broadcasts aroud the clock every day.The tragic scene attracted my eyes each time. But most time,i was filled with sensation. From Prime Minister to Chinese military,to common people, every body is doing anything they can. They are really HEROES!
Yesterday,my company donated 20,000 RMB to Chinese Qingdao RED CROSS.For a company,it maybe not a big sum.But it stands our love to people in quake-hit areas.
Another thing,i have to say .One of German friends,is visiting China for work.He was shocked by the astonishing tragedy and sharplying rising casaulties.Afraid of being rejected by Blood station,(he is 67 years old.)he asked me to send him the Chinese Red Cross Bank Account via emails.
I don't know how much he donated.I don't care how much.It doesn't matter how much. His action already touched me,not the amout of money.Salute to you,Horst!
I really appreciate people around the world who pray for victims in this devastating natural disaster.Thank you!
