If you own a computer then you better own anti-virus software too. Anti-virus software will help you keep your computer protected from worms, Trojans, spyware, adware and more. There are thousands of different viruses that your computer can be exposed to and without anti-virus software you are bound to get a virus on your computer at some point. In fact, without anti-virus software, you computer is a major crash just waiting to happen and such crashes can be quite costly in the end.

All you have to do is click on update anti-virus software and your virus definitions and virus fighting tools will be immediately updated when you are using an Internet connection. You should be certain that all of your anti-virus software applications are updated every two weeks or a minimum of once a month.
Although you can get anti-virus software off the Internet for free, it is always better to buy the full version from the manufacturer so that you can be eligible for regular updates and you get all of the features in the full version. Likewise, the small investment you make now in an anti-virus program can save you a fortune later in computer repairs. Remember, many computer technicians can make fifty dollars an hour or more and if you have a virus on your computer that is particularly destructive, you can wind up paying your computer technician quite a bundle. You can also be sure that even though the computer technician may be quite pleased with the fact that you are paying him or her a bundle, you will not be very happy at the expenses you will incur.

I personally used AVG Antivirus for my computer and it does the job well.

Switch to linux you'll have 90% less problems. Switch to MAC you'll have 98% less problems.
I am on windows and don't have a single worm because i only know how they work and destroying them if they get into my system is not an issue for me.
Whereas antivirus is only able to block and delete not demolish the virus, i think they are useless unless they are built with artificial intelligence to grab worm from its root.

Why not update anti - virus software? Most of them even can do it automatically.

i don't like them they turn my computer too slow
I give Network support for multiple companies and tried most of the anti-virus programs,
they are all like siting ducks for cryptography viruses eg mcafee anti-virus or leave an autorun.inf copy on your partition and let the virus damage your registry "hidden files" before detecting it, like avg. the only anti-virus that worked for me is kaspersky that don't slow down your system and stops any virus befor damaging your windows. Anti-virus is recommended because some users don't have basic knowlege in windows. With all the holes in Microsoft windows it is still the most supported and have a friendly user iterface. With a proper use and hardware it is still the fastest exploring system.

I have used AVG for few years and found it to be low on system resources and protect my computer from Virus.
