As someone who uses this kind of "broadcast contact" method for certain serious
enquiries, I can only say that the service is extremely useful, especially when you are
sourcing suppliers of items/products you haven't handled before.
I'm not saying it's always possible to read all 100 messages out of 100 incoming
offers....most people already know - in their minds - which supplier they'd like to deal with, within 48 hours from receipt of their quotations. That obviously means certain others
get left by the wayside - that's business I guess. I think you know this works both ways.
Even for buyers, not every enquiry they get from one of their own clients turns into an
order....
This method of contacting suppliers - whether GOLD suppliers or not - is good for both the seasoned buyer and the newcomer:
(a) As a seasoned buyer, when I am looking for a new item, by getting in tens or hundreds of quotations, I am better able to judge which supplier to contact.
There is no set rule - by using due diligence and some of the knowledge I have, I narrow down on suppliers I'd like to deal with. Follow up includes chatting with them on MSN, etc.
This in itself will give you a good picture of what the particular supplier is all about -
in terms of service, product knowledge, follow up on samples requests, etc.
I personally also prefer to concentrate on suppliers whose factories are closer to Hong Kong - ie. Guangdong province. It makes life easier in terms of inspections, accessibility,
etc as well. That is not to say we do not deal with suppliers from other provinces - we do -
its just that our GD suppliers far outnumber the ones from other provinces!
(b) For the newcomer, contacting several suppliers for items which you have little or no knowledge about is also a great way to start acquiring the basics on that particular product. If you are new to an item/field, would you be satisified contacting just 3 or 4 suppliers ? If you have say 20-30 offers to choose from, you would already know which price bracket to aim for
(as most suppliers will be within a set range for basic item without value-added
features).
Hope this answers your question !
