BE CAREFUL WHEN SENDING SAMPLES !!!
Post 1 of 22
We asked by a company in USA to send sample of teak furniture by express courier.

They paid the sample but asked us to send the sample "collect" which mean they paid once the samples arrive

But when the sample arrived, this company refused to pay !!! [em6]

We sent large, beautiful and expensive teak furniture which cost A LOT OF $$$

In the end, the courier company sent us the bill and threaten us to pay otherwise they close our account. We have no choice but to pay it.

We hope this lesson useful for other companies.

Thank you

Having been on both sides of the fence , i think i can explain to those who do not understand the buyers mentality ,and once you understand the buyers mentality , you will know how to avoid this problem.

my company now spends over 120000usd a year on DHL and about 20000-40000 of that is on samples. we ship a lot freight collect, so i have a lot of experiance with this issue

Based on the story that was stated i think we can assume that this company was not interested in your product.  the question is why?   why was the company not interested in your product?

There can be many answers , but the answer is probable for 1 of the following reasons.

1. your sample was bad quality

2. you did not make the sample correctly

3. you did not prperly follow instructions given

4. you sent samples not as instructed.

this happens all the time mainly with chinese suppliers. once they are given the right to ship freight collect. they will send anything the think they can sell . big packages of junk that go right into the garbage. why should they customer pay the frieght for samples that they did not request? whay should the company pay the frieght for samples that were made wrong or not good quality?

as a fair resolution to both parties i would propse as followes.

1 if you ship anything not requested the shipper should pay

2 if you ship samples that are not correct or quality not right shipper should pay or the samples should be redone and sent on shippers account.

therefore our company adpoted the following policy

i dont think you even understand the question.  how someone knew the samples are not upto their standard before looking at it?  if someone refuse to pay,  that menas that they never recevied the sample at first place,  please note, UPS , FEDEX etc.  delier the package only after they get payment for COD,  so they wont know before paying if the samples are upto the standard or not.

also remember its the samples,  to see only if the product is upto their standard thats why they want samples.  also the company take utmost care to make and send samples because thats only the way to get the order.  so i dont think anone will send inferior sample, its not to their interest.

Very sorry you lost money.  No more free samples.  In the US there is what is called a Better Business Bureau.  The company probably does bad business in the US too.  The Better Business Bureau would contact the business who stole your free sample and they would contact them.  Even take them to court if the company is still in business.

Better Business Bureau, I write it down!

2 if you ship samples that are not correct or quality not right shipper should pay or the samples should be redone and sent on shippers account.

therefore our company adpoted the following policy

1. we do not take the first samples ever freight collect until we have seen samples from the factory. either they sent the first samples on their account or by post. or they met us in china

2 we inform all companies that if they send many samples that are not correct for whatever reason and it is their fault , they will need to send they next samples on their account. if they do not redo the samples we chargeback the frieght and they have to pay anyways.

these two rules have somehow cut down the bad samples we get by about 99% so i guess it works

To make myself clear i do not mean that all chinese factories are like this, far from it, there are many many good factories out there who deal well and are a pleasure to deal with and always follow instruction and make good samples. but percentage wise these factories are a small percent, because trade site like alibaba and others have no way to know this most of the suppliers on this site and other trade sites, are not good and very hard to deal with .

i would like however to thank all they factories who give customers hard times about things like samples and many other things, because they make it so hard to use this site and othersites , and only experianced importers who know how to sort the good from the bad have a real benifit in the end. if not for them every person in the world would be able to use this site and i would have no business. but making issues about stupidities like samples they chase away many people some of whom become my customers.

I can't agree with you too much!

I think that most of the company have this problem.

It's unfair that they told us that customer are refused to pay the charge after 6months or 1yrs later.

how can everyone supplier send the free sample to customer and they are doing like this ?

we don't known where we can complains with those cheated company.

you can list their name or contact information here.

so that other suppliers can be known them and not cheated by them again.

[em10]

We believe, manufacturer's are responsible to submit samples FREE of costs to

a potential buyer/customer! NOT to charge for it. There is no need to send samples through courier but local postal systems, which takes slightly longer and is cheaper.

Otherwise, what is the point of the internat or B2B portals? This is their showcase,

but if there is an interest from the buyer, the final decision warrants a physical inspection/examination of the material manufactured/producer by the supplier.

When you wish to buy something, you visit a store/shop in your country and examine the material and should you prefer/like the product, you pay and take it with you?

There are suppliers asking for account details, and then it is mis-used by African criminals. If a supplier/manufacturer cannot afford to cover the postal charges and

submit samples for scrutiny, that supplier/manufacturer is NOT reputable/reliable and is in business to collect costs from potential buyer/customers!

Thank you from London, England.

Sorry to hear about your experence! Seems like there is no end to what some companies will do. You just have to not be so excited about a sale that you do not get your money up front. When I first started out I had companies place large order COD and then they would not pay. My husband had orders and even went to the persons shop to verify that they were who they said they were with a shop just like they said they had. He allowed them to place a big order on credit, then we didn't get paid, went to the shop and it was gone. I have also had established customers that I have done business with for years and have extended them credit, not pay for a shipment . What lengths people will go to cheat! You gota get part of your money up front no matter what! The busniess world can be very cruel, so you have to watch out for your self all the time and never let your guard down.

Hi Eddie

Bad luck, the only thing you can do is to include the cost into the quotation plus a few extra dollars for you trouble.

Golden rule.  "All Samples should be paid for"

Good luck

Robert

I have been trying to get a good supplier of electronics for a long time now and I keep getting responses from scammers.  Some of them use the SENDER CARD of real companies but they always tell me to contact them through yahoo or hotmail.  This I ALWAYS know is a scammer.

Are any of you veteran suppliers willing to supply me with personal electronics?

I trust you more than I trust those that respond to my buyer leads.  Reach me at Miguel.Peralta@Honeywell.com

Thanks!
