Enquiry & inquiry They are almost the same but : Enquiry : is more often used for a simple request for information Inquiry : is used for a long serious study : Several people have made enquiries about study / Several people have made enquiries about the job / a government inquiry into the disaster

In business, there is no deep meaning in using these words. British way is enquiry and American way is inquiry for the simple asking for a product/commodity.

I am 99% sure that the EN comes from French and the IN comes from Latin.

The definition is the same though, so using either is acceptable.

Although I do remember hearing at some point that some people think you should use ENquire when referring to people and INquire when referring to "things".... but I have never been sure if that is true or not


(eg you enquire about how someone is feeling.. you inquire about getting a quote)

All of the answers are great!! But for me, I much prefer Foow's, because his example clreally tell the difference between "enquire"  and  "inquire".[em1]
