Hello,

I am from India and I want to venture into import business. I want to import clothes and shoes form China. However, I am new to the business. Can anyone advise me on how to get started? I would be very happy if someone could tell me what are the procedures required by the Govt. of India and how to go about it? What are the legal requirements? What are the duties involved e.t.c.

Faithfully.

Award 10 MVPs ( What's this? )for the best answer.

Hi Wapang,

Government regulations have eased considerably and starting a business is quite easy. You must register a company or even a prorietorship company. A proprietorship company is easy to start and all you need is to choose a name, get a trade licence and open a bank account. Getting an IEC (Importer Exporter Code) from RBI is easy, too and once you make an application, you are ready to go. As a poster on this forum has suggested, you can search online for more information and visit the site he has recommended. Also, you can ask a CA for guidance, preferably someone known to you or your family.

My suggestion is to apply for a job/internship at a shoes/garments manufacturing/trading company. This will help you learn about the products, customers, government regulations, tax laws etc. And, you will learn all this even as you earn. Take up as much responsibility as you can and you will learn fast. Buying and selling are the easy part...it is the taxes, regulations of doing a business and other factors that are the tricky part...and you can learn all this while you are earning. Good luck and best wishes, Wapang!

Once you have mastered the trade you are ready to GO!

Good luck and best wishes,
