The news of the Taliban taking 22 South Korean peace missionaries hostage hit the headlines, July - August 2007.
Two girls were the first to be released, after much confusion and shattered hopes of earlier release. August 13, Kim Ji Na and Kim Kyong Ja were released. They were taken to a hotel in Kabul and flown back home. But the fate of the other 19 hostages were hanging in the balance of life and death.
They spoke of the personal sacrifice of another female hostage, who forego her freedom and gave it to her colleague.
They were unaware that two male pastors were shot dead by the Taliban earlier. During the time of their ordeal, they were living in "
Hedes" one day, and one day in "Heaven". The leader of the group, Pastor Bae Hyung-kyu was found dead on July 25, and 29-year old Shim Sung-min was found July 30.
After 40 days of captivity, the mothers of the remaining hostages recited a few sentences in the Afghan language which frequently used in Korean phrase, "
WOORI CHA SHIK" which translated "Our Children" sent in a video message to the Taliban. The Taliban negotiator said that 3 or 4 more women hostages will be released.
Three More Hostages Released
August 29, Two more groups of 5 or 6 hostages will be released, totalling 12 hostages freed to date.
August 30, All remaining hostages are freed. After 43 days in captivity. The last 7 hostages were released on this day.
My memories went back to the days when I was in Korea, watching the Cable Television channels. The face of the Pastor with a wide smile, and a fervent Christian came across my mind, as I heard many surmons over the Tube. Pastor Bae gave his life for the love of the people in Afghanistan, working among the children in the hospital, caring for their needs.
