I am currently interested in making a small trial order into Australia and have worked out prices with the supplier. Shipping by UPS is nearly 270 USD, but sea shipping is only around 65 USD. The trial order is under $1000 AUD.

1) What, if any, fees will I have to pay Customs?

2) How will I receive the shipment from the nearest port?

3) Do I need a customs declaration for the imported goods?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go through the yellow pages in your nearest capital city and find a Customs Clearance Agent.  Call them and they will tell you what fees and charges and Import duties you will be up for. They will also tell you what documents you need

The docs Grigo mentioned are what you need from your foreign supplier.

Docs you need for Australian Customs is definitely not DIY stuff for a beginner. The agent referred to by Grigo will charge you around $150AUD to handle the import. Try to do this yourself and you may end up in a costly mess not in the least including massive storage charges in a bonded warehouse (which are licences to print money) while you sort out your docs.

A surprising array of ordinary goods also require import permits from various Federal agencies which can take up to a month to obtain.

Duty on most stuff coming into Australia is 5% plus a further 10% for GST depending on Invoice value.

Above all, talk with an import or customs agent well before you even order the stuff as Grigo suggested.

1) What, if any, fees will I have to pay Customs? YES GST TAX AND IMPORT TAX. NOT APPLICABLE IF THE TOTAL GOODS LESS THAN AUD500 I THINK. CHECK IT OUR YOURSELF.

2) How will I receive the shipment from the nearest port? IF YOU ARE IN IN VICTORIA MOST LIKELY YOU WILL COLLECT IT AT AIRPORT WEST BY AIR.

3) Do I need a customs declaration for the imported goods? YES BETTER DECLARE BECAUSE OFFICER WILL OPEN YOUR BOX FOR RANDOM CHECKING.

REGARDS

I ordered a shipment from Taiwan a few months ago. It was metal products.

I don't know much about the little technical details of importing so my supplier told me to get a CUSTOMS BROKER/ FORWARDING AGENT.

They handle everything for you. Delivery, clearance, paying customs etc. All you do is tell your supplier is to give you and your customs broker all the forms for clearance and they'll take care of everything.

Very simple

I have started to import from China for my business. I would definitely recommend a customs broker. I spoke to 3 and decided on the most professional and i have not been disappointed. They know what paperwork is needed and will inform you and make sure everything is in order.

I told them how i would get the shipment to me (by truck) and they arranged that. They also organise import duties and GST payment.

I am importing underwear so i have to pay 17.5% import duties on the invoice price but this depends on what you are importing. Transport costs are then added and 10% GST has to be paid on total. If shipping, there are port fees as well and can be quite expensive.

I have also had goods delivered by DHL which is very quick compared to shipping. Shipping from China takes about 3 weeks and then about a week to clear customs.

It seemed like it took forever to get here. So DHL may be more suitable for smaller orders.

Good luck as it is an exciting experience when you are just starting your business.

Where are you importing from?

And What items are you importing?

I m an exporter from India and customers in Australia generally prefer delivery by courier  by Air via TNT or DHL for small orders below USD 4000.

TNT and DHL provide excellent door to door service. You require no custom clearing agent. They pay import duty for you and collect at time of delivery.

Hi there,

The best place to get all the answer for your question is www customs gov au. You can email them and they will gladly answer all you inquiries.

You also must be aware regarding trademark protection here in Australia. Especially branded products.

Where goods are imported into and have applied to them a similar or identical trade mark that has been applied without the consent of the trade mark owner in , they may be seized by Customs.

Customs is tasked with administering certain provisions of the Copyright Act 1968, the Trade Marks Act 1995 and the Sydney 2000 Games (Indicia and Images) Protection Act 1996 to protect the intellectual property rights of individuals, companies and corporations.

The owner or authorised licensee of copyrightable goods or a trade mark can object to the importation of goods which allegedly infringe their intellectual property rights. This is done through lodging a Notice of Objection with Customs listing the trade marks or goods in which they can claim copyright. A list of the companies that presently have Notices of Objection in place with Customs under section 132 of the Trade Marks Act 1995 is available on our website at WWW CUSTOMS GOV AU under Media, Publications & Forms - Customs Notices - Intellectual Property - Trademarks.

It is important to note that Customs will only seize goods if the amount is considered to be of a commercial quantity. There is no specific number that constitutes a commercial quantity, as there is no set definition. Each importation is to be taken on its merits. Goods may be considered commercial quantity if it is believed that they are intended to be used in the course of trade, for example, there is a large quantity of the same product, there is a history of importations of similar products by the same importer or if it is believed that the goods are for sale, lease or hire, etc.

Again for more details information just contact customs via email

Best Regards

Ronald Pramana
