One of my friend told me I could not be a good leader or boss, because I treated the people work under me kindly, I share them many things... She said to be a successful leader, I hv to treat the employee as “ tools” and “resources” but not “human”...this puzzled very much,I hv different thinking, I thought human being are equal, They are neither “tools” nor “resources”…If money make you treat other not human..what left in the heart?

You must treat employees like people though they are resources, as to be a mean boss you'll lose productivity, and respect.  Two key items that you must have when the stuff hits the fan and you need your employees to step up a level.

hi,nice to meet you here.have a good day.

respect is more important for both boss and employee. We need cooperation, treat employes as our relative, our friend, not tools or resources.

tools or resources maybe temporaty, but relative or friend could be our lasting partner.they could help us overcome difficulties.

best wishes,

Sophia

That was a beautiful letter. It shows that you have a kind heart and a sweet, inner soul.

People will respect you and follow you if you treat them as equals. Everyone can feel your love, when they work for you, and especially if you lead them and teach them with patience.

What you get is a loyal employee who does his job well, because he knows you will appreciate it.

The world needs more people like you, dear.

Keep your heart open, you will never be on the wrong side.

"Human Resources" seems to be an oxymoron at first sight, as a "resource" normally is a thing, while a human is not.

But look at it from the point of view of an enterprise. Employees play the role of a resource, especially if they are operators. Many times they can easily be substituted with machines.

But they are a v ery special kind of resource, as they have feelings, intelligence, etc. So obviously you can't treat them like another resource that doesn't have these qualities.

So you'll have to treat "Human Resources" like humans (nice and respectful), because they are humans, and you have to direct them as well, as they are also "resources".

I think this ambiguous situation confuses a few people, they give up, and then they either treat people harshly or too nice, without giving them directions. The trick is to follow the path in the middle.

All multinational companies world over have a department called 'HR Deptt.'--Human Resource Deptt.

This is, one of the most difficult and challenging department in any organisation.

Employees are resources for your business.  However, do not take this to mean that you can treat them badly.  Just like any other resource in your business you must take care of them to keep your business running smoothly.

You must look at them as resources in the sense that you must not get involved with them personally, otherwise it becomes difficult to run your company.  If an employee is your friend but you need to fire them for not doing their job it will be difficult, however if they are a resource of your company and they become a poor resource you get rid of them.

Treat them as you would want to be treated, but remember they are a resource for your company.

Thank you for this clarification, differentiation of the word resource from the human relation aspects.

Yes, you can be a good leader, showing good leadership skill, attributes and potentials and at the same time be a good friend to your subordinates.

LEADERSHIP ability is a non moral ability, it can be attained and also be build up and inherited from birth. Children growing up in big families tend to exercise their leadership qualities more than single child families.

Leadership is amoral, that is having no good or bad attributes to it, for example a gangster chief is a leader, or a religious cleric is a leader in his own rites.

Having said that, we come to the terms of the corporate environment, where leadership role plays the part to achieve the goals and objectives of the group or the corporate mission. There are many gurus and teachings from many sources, but you have to look at the Asian perspective.

David McClelland, HBS said there are three needs to motivation theory: 1. Power needs, 2. Achievement needs and 3. Affiliation needs. All these should be balanced to be a successful leader.

  1. Power needs - to gather much authority, power and command over a group of people. Political power, the ability to persuade someone to do something which you want to, and sometimes against his/her own wants.
  2. Achievement needs - the constant need to achieve goals, to climb the next highest mountain, to do the extremes of a task, which takes you to another level. The satisfaction of accomplishing a challenging task, and evaluated to be successful and well done.
  3. Affiliation needs - the need to have friends, a group of people around you, who love and have good rapport with you. Some companies have to cater for this need, because it helps to boost productivity. E.g. pipe-in music at the shop floor, or a people-friendly environment, with amenities and facilities, e.g. child-care centre for the working mothers.
