The Mediterrean climate of western Syria plus the waters of the Euphrates make this a reasonably fertile land, its situation enhanced by the historic associations of the ancient trade routes between Europe and Asia. Aleppo and Damscus are among the oldest continuously inhabited cities int eh World, spanning 4500 years. Successive civilisations have left their marks, such as the impressive ruins of Palmyra on the edge of the Syrian desert.

Wheat, fruit, cotton and other crops are produced in large quantities, and there has been some industrialization; oil is another significant resource. Independent since 1946, Syria's development has been hindered by conflict of Israel, tense relations witht  the neighbours by the international sanctions intended to end the terrorism it allegedly encourages. Turkey's dams on the Euphrates are a threat to Syria's water supplies and future prosperity.
