New Moderator Training - Apparently its needed
Post 1 of 5

To all Moderators and ADMIN

Its apparent from reviewing some of the posts being removed as trade leads that some moderators and probally the most recent moderators do not understand the proper way to remove trade leads.  I went thru several where the original poster of a thread had no trade lead but that the members posting after the intial question were leaving the trade leads.

This could grow to a huge concern for all members if they continually penalize posters who have done nothing wrong.   The point is that only the poster of a trade lead should be penalized and is easy to do as the delete, trade lead, and spam button is available under each response to a thread.

Over 65% of the threads sent to the trade lead board that I reviewed were not even trade leads.

Most moderators know who the rolling spammers are but there is no reason to hit someone for 100 points if they arent the ones leaving the spam.

IM not sure how anyone else is doing it but I do as follows and only to the person doing it.

Delete -10 points :  Plagerism, non-responsive posts e.g. [em19] leaving only emoticons or incohherent garbage e.g. ddddddffdggg and so on.

Trade Lead -30 points:  Any post or response that contains contact information or a link to an offsite website for the purpose of profit or driving traffic to them specifically.

This is where the most damage is being done as some moderators are removing posts as trade leads that are not trade leads and are only informational sources that have nothing to do with the poster or the posters business.

spam -100 points:  Multiple placements of trade leads through out the forums.

This is easy to check by clicking on the posters profile and seeing how many times the poster has left the same trade lead.  More than twice in my book is spam.  1 or 2 times is only a trade lead.

Any new moderator that doesn't understand this needs to ask a moderator thas been doing it or by directly contacting ADMIN.

The goal is to keep the playing field level for all members even the new members.  There are going to be older members that want to abuse the policies even though they know better but if we as moderators stay consistent and remove posts in the right way old and new will have no reason to complain about loosing MVP points.

The following was issued to those of us that have been moderators for some time by the then ADMIN STAFF:

Guest Moderation Guidelines

Privileges

  1. Guest moderators are allowed to delete, edit and respond to messages from other members.

  2. • Guest moderators are identified by an ‘M’ icon.
  3.

  4. • Guest moderators are not eligible to participate in the community MVP program.
  5.

Responsibilities

  1. Moderators must abide by Alibaba Resources moderation rules, including:

    1. o Any Trade Leads found within the forums must be moved immediately to the Trade Leads Forum. (The Trade Lead forum is used to save trade leads but is not on public display.)

    2.

    3. o Any negative emails to moderators about their answers/contributions are to be dealt with as moderators see fit, as long as the communication does not become negative, contain criticism, abuse or vilification by either side.

    4.

    5. o Any scams or complaints about other companies or Alibaba.com shall be moved to the Customer Complaints forum. (This forum is not on public display; it is used to store customer complaints and will be moderated by a member of the Alibaba.com service team,

       • Moderators should act/respond in a professional manner and not engage in any personal/commercial acts of promotion or competitive criticism.

    6. • If a moderator is placed in a position of having to comment on Alibaba.com, its products or the Resources channel, the Moderator should avoid providing respondent with information and move the question to the Talk with Alibaba forum (moderated by the Alibaba.com service team).
    7.

    8. • Moderators must have Alibaba Trade Manager installed and remain logged on when performing moderation tasks. Moderators are encouraged to communicate related forum activity to their Alibaba.com supervisor on a daily basis.
    9.

    10. • Moderators should visit and moderate their related forum(s) daily. An Alibaba.com community supervisor will be performing daily quality checks for each forum and will send out a weekly forum performance report to related moderators. Alibaba.com reserves the right to remove moderation rights from moderators whose performance is below expectation. (A detailed performance plan will be given after a one month trial moderation period.)
    11.

    12. • Moderators are encouraged to prepare related themes/topics for their forum every week and encourage forum users to participate in discussion.
    13.

General editing guidelines

Guest moderators should edit member postings when they:

  1. • Contain profanity – edit
  2.

  3. • Contain off-topic content
  4.

  5. • Violate the discussion board rules
  6.

  7. • Edit postings rather than delete them - unless the posting is rendered meaningless after editing in which case postings may be deleted.
  8.

  9. • Move off-topic threads to a suitable forum.
  10.

Locking threads:

Threads may be locked when:

  1. • The initial thread contains valuable information but further discussion isn’t necessary.
  2.

  3. • The thread is becoming too long
  4.

  5. • Discussion is moving from the original theme but the thread itself is deemed valuable. In this case a new thread should be started for the new theme.

Some of this has changed through the evelution of the forums but its still a good guide if the new moderators have not recieved any such instruction from ADMIN

Great Idea, and constructive suggestion.

Ranger took much time and effort to think it and write as suggestion for Moderator's training. Dated April. 2008, now it is Jan 2009, do not let it die off.

My question:

  • Who's going to do it?
  • Shall we first clean up the House of the Moderators?
  • What incentives and punishment system to implement it?
  • Why not Admin and staff of Alibaba start by policing the various forums to check any wrrong doings? The executive committee.
  • Shall we write this Regulatory guidelines on every forum page to remind Moderators of their accountability?
  • What if a moderator choose to ignore the guidelines?
