Marketing is when you advertise something in the media to generate sales. Sales is a product or service you have available for sell  to buyers. In other words, to sell a product or service you need to market it first. You may have the best mousetrap in the world but how can you sell it if first you didn't market it to bring in the buyers.

Before your customer would buy any products from you, they need to know about your product. That's where the marketing function comes in whereas it helps to promote/position your product in the market so that it create awareness and let the market know about you. Example:-. No1 would vote for "Ma Ying Jiu if the people doesn't  know about him, he would have successfully "market" himself to the society.

Once your market knows about your product, you could have easily sell your products to the target market as they "know" about it.

Hope it helps!

Marketing is the art of creating the atmosphere to make sales easier and includes myriads of activity other than advertising including particularly "image development".

These days, even product R&D and design is steered by marketing professionals who interface between consumer needs and the technical engineers, art designers and accountants of companies which produce products.

Top notch brand name marketers are found almost only in the world's larger ad agencies and are psychologists who specialise in "sensation transference" in the subconscious mind of consumers (which is the scientific fact that the sensation of what we see actually transfers into the product - to the effect we buy "image" not "product").
