The feasibility of *12 months HMS contracts
Post 1 of 9
The cost of bulk 30000MT HMS 1&2 rules at $350-400 CIF price. But majority of *12 annual contract suppliers offer anything around $270-280. There has been mixed views from what I hear from my interaction. How the non-yard owner resellers are able to offer uniform price over a period and the possibility huge collection every month?. I would like to get the real picture especially views from Sixer, iulianap and Guna on this.

Dear friend,

After a few years experience in scrap business,I don't believe anymore in big monthly shipments with a fix low price. 30K of HMS is a mountain of metal, not easy to collect every month.

A serious seller have a Clause in Contract regarding  re-negotiation of the price every month or trimestrial.

Thanks . Your points are valid and I always seen your practical experience in your replies .

I would like to get some more views from people who have gone through such deals. This is to get a clear picture of how things work here, especially Chinese and Korean associates who are fond of such contracts.

30K MT of HMS is possible to collect only with VERY VERY BIG yard owners, and not difficult to know who they are. To contact with them, better go to meet them in person, face to face, directly, not through a midle.

30K*12months is a crazy quantity. Even big importer like POSCO can not be easy to collect such contract.

350-400$CIF is unbelievable this time. Price for HMS 1/2 80:20 CFR East Asia is @ $600/MT at moment, even by bulk vessel cannot be cheaper.

Many guys from USA offer me qty 30K*12 months, it's funny! Just's waste of time with these kinds of deal. 100% scamer.

I am real, serious importer of steel scrap, plastic scrap / regrind grain from Vietnam.

Nice to meet you!

I know their is a lot of nonsense on this site when it comes to HMS, but the bottom line is their is some serious supply out there. I work directly for a scrap metal exporter that exports 80,000 to 100,000 Tons a month to mills in turkey, india, and china, so YES it does exist. If you read up on good publications like Steel Business Breifing and ISRI publications you can find out how much mills are currently paying. Right now at the given moment mills are paying anywhere from $300-$350 CFR for 80:20, shredded, and P&S.

I can supply you whatever you need. I have also posted a great piece on the realities of this industry here on alibaba, you can visit it using the URL below:

Additionally I am going to have to seriously disagree with cyber chap. Although I know you mean well what your saying is innaccurate. Yes it is true, 30,000 is a big qty, but very standard in this business. The seller I work for loads 80,000+ tons per month, and they are one of the bigger exporters here in the USA, but when you compare them to companies like SIMS and Schnitzer 80,000tons per month is peanuts. SIMS, who owns and operates over 40 yards in the USA, could probably export 300,000 tons per month without even breaking a sweat.

And in regards to POSCO, I have personally been involved in dealings with them and know their input and output. Between all their mills in 2007 they produced over 8 million tons of steel, yes 8 million. Granted the formula for steel includes iron ore and other elements besides scrap steel, but you can only imagine how much scrap steel they used to produce that.

Now as far as your pricing I cant see when you posted this so forgive me if I am off, but $600 CFR???? Do you not read steel business briefing???

Mills across the world are currently paying $300-$350 per ton, so good luck at $600. Even at the peak 12-14 months ago prices were not that high, so I am not sure where you are getting your information from.

Dear Asset

Yes, You have given good insight. The discussion point is not if 30000 or 60000 MT are possible. Many of us have handled that spot deals. Only thing I wanted to know is, if anybody can get fixed price and fixed quantity continuously for 12 months.

If you are little more shrewd you could have noticed, the price $600 is last year's price from the reply date. Now the market is around $300+ CFR for containers from USA. But I still doubt anybody would pay you the same price for bulk shipment.

$300 CFR in containers??? I would like to see who is doing that right now, but that sounds pretty low. I suppose if you were shipping from the West Coast to China it would be possible but anywhere else it would be far too costly for a seller to ship in containers at $300 CFR.

Like I said, I sell for the biggest yards we have here in the USA, so I know the prices they are all selling for. Its between $280 - $310 FOB - Bulk CFR rates your adding $15 - $30 on top of that depending where it is going.

THAT IS A COMPLETE JOKE.... I am a non-yard owner trader and is not very responsible to offer long period contracts on HMS. Thisis very true in USA and caribbean.

Only short 250-500 ton per month contract is a realistic thing. scrap is a limited resources getting harder and harder to find..
