Hi guys

I am hoping to make my first Import of vegetable (rapeseed/vegetable) oil into the UK [em11] I have read about many pitfalls to be avoided and ensuring that I am dealing with reputable and trustworthy sellers [em1].

How can I find and trust an agent to act for me? How do I know if the agent is independent of the seller? If anyone has dealing in this commodity who could recommend an agent and supplier I would be most grateful.

Additionally, for UK importers, is there any advice you could offer me regarding best ports to use (I'm based Watford), any recommended carriers and any other pointers (as you remember your first import)

Many thanks

Mike

Hello TopDoc,

Rapeseed oil is used increasingly for bio-diesel fuel in Europe.  You need to know some things about the product before you get an agent, for example are you buying raw or semi refined oil.

I have excellent contacts in Beijing China for souring products and agents for this and other industries.  Depending on the contract quantity I may be of assistance to you in this venture.

Regards,

Ulric

[em1] Importing rapeseed oil for fuel? It is quite new to me, I am Lijuan, and there is a big rapeseed oil factory near my home, it is always emitting pleasant fragrance day and night. I reallly like it and long to go home whenever i think of its nice smell.

We all cook with rapeseed oil, it is tasty and quite healthy. I even drink it when i got stomachache [em1], Mom told me it will help relieve the pain a lot!!

since you dont seem to know anything about buying from china i can give you some general guidelines based on the way i do business there.

i am not in your line of business nor am i from europe. i am based in singapore and am an asian.

first you get as many quotes as you can from suppliers on alibaba.com or globalsources.com

then go with the ones who feel big or have good price advantages.

ask them all the info you want to get.

shortlist the number of companies you feel comfortable with.

ask for samples and see the packing etc. if you are doing oem ask if they can do branding as per your requirement. ask if there are any hidden costs anywhere.

then before you place order YOU MUST VISIT THE FACTORY.  NEVER EVER PLACE ORDERS WITHOUT SEEING THE FACTORY. PERSONALLY I HAVE REGRETTED EVERY TIME I HAVE DISREGARDED MY OWN RULE. there are lot of really big companies who dont come through as big and there are really small companies who act like they are big. you can only know the truth by actually going and seeing their setup.

also when you see the premises there are so many other things around which give you new ideas.

dont be nervous. china is a great place to do business. dont deviate too much from the above basics in the begining. once you get the hang of the place, people and style of doing business then you can play with the game. until then stay safe.

Dear Mike,

I am also based in Watford and just began looking towards china and thailand to buy some silk boxes.

How have you faired?

do you know what an expressing number is?

Have you discovered the best way of paying for your goods ie safest?

Can you advise of any pit-falls to be aware of?

Hope you don't mind me asking you

kind regards

Sue

Hi Sue, Silk tissue boxes ?

expressing number might indicate a number of something, or "how many"

It is appreciated..that you posted your.....queries here...always very good to find out the legalities and sources.

It is advised....not to deal with all those who have posted their.....contact links...'HERE'..these are the ones always found to be most......u know!!!!

A genuine business.....person will never....post...contact links in forums/ here....as it is not allowed......but the ones...who do so are the most...... Guess u know?

unless they're new at this. I, too, am looking for an agent to help with a starting order of edible oils, preferably jatropha or rapeseed for production of bio-diesel. I am in the US and am newly reaching overseas.

Hi, how about Palm oil ?
I can help you with that..

Hi Mike, Since you are new in the business and are dealing with a technical product, it would be best for you to deal with established trading agents that deal in edible oils. Though it might be a bit higher compared to buying direct from a factory, you are assured of getting the quality and specs you need. After you "get your feet wet", then that is the time you should look for a cheaper source.  One such trading company I know of is KUOK GRAINS AND OILS which is a trading company specifically dealing in Edible Oils that is based in Singapore. This company is owned by the kuok family known as one of the richest families in Southeast Asia.
