Hong Kong Customs Seizes 8 Million HKD of Counterfeit Goods

Hong Kong Customs announced that on February 28, 2008, officers made the largest seizure of counterfeit mobile phone accessories after a five-day operation. Officers raided three trading companies, three warehouses and a packaging center seizing 8 million HK dollars worth of fake goods, including mobile-phone batteries, and hand free headsets and chargers.

China Uncovers 10.8 Million Cases of Economic Violations

China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) has investigated 10.8 million economic violations and crimes over the past five years, involving a total of 170.5 billion yuan, of which 8.3 billion yuan (630,000 cases) was related to the production and sale of fake and low quality goods. To protect consumer safety, the SAIC has launched food safety checkups and crackdowns on false and illegal advertising, pyramid selling, trademark violations and commercial fraud and has pledged to strengthen food and product safety monitoring efforts in the future.

SFDA Exposes 25 Websites Selling Illegal Drugs

China's State Food and Drug Administration has exposed 25 websites that have been involved in selling illegal medicines. According to the deputy director of SFDA, these websites have fabricated medical institution names to release fake medicine information and sell fake drugs. SFDA will work with the Ministry of Information Industry to check and enforce legal action. China approved a total of 1257 websites to provide online medicine services to consumers by the end of 2007. Of those, only seven websites are allowed to sell non-prescription medicines to consumers. Authorized websites are posted on the SFDA’s official website.

US State Department Approves FDA China Offices

The Food and Drug Administration has been approved by the US State Department to establish eight full-time positions at US diplomatic posts in China, pending authorization from the Chinese government. In addition, the FDA will employ five local Chinese nationals to work with the agency. The drug regulator's offices will be located at the US Embassy in Beijing and the Consulates General in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Building the FDA's capacity outside the USA supports the agency's "Beyond our Borders" initiative. The idea is to build stronger cooperative relationships with the US regulator's counterparts around the world and to enhance technical cooperation with foreign colleagues. Permanent offices in China will also allow greater access for inspections and better interactions with manufacturers to help assure that products shipped to the US meet the destination country's standards for safety and manufacturing quality.

Studios Settle Internet Piracy Case

Five Hollywood studios have reached a settlement with a Chinese Internet company accused of providing cybercafes with illegal copies of their movies. The five studios sued for supplying Internet cafes with computer software that allowed users to download and watch illegal copies of 20 Hollywood movies. The group said the five studios have now reached an agreement that resolves the pending lawsuits. The guilty party has apologized and paid a "significant" amount in compensation. The Motion Picture Association estimates that piracy in China costs American studios $244 million and Chinese studios $2.4 billion in lost box office revenue in 2005, the last year these figures were released.

Campaigners Warn EU of Growing Dangers from Fake Goods

In an effort to raise awareness on the social and economic harm of fake luxury goods, campaigners turned to the European Union for support in their fight against the booming trade in counterfeit products. The Authentics Foundation aims to combat the appeal of cheap knockoffs by showing the negative aspects of these goods, illustrating they are often made with child labor, used to finance crime and potential health hazards. The group in Brussels organized an exhibition displaying goods ranging from a fake Ferrari sports car produced in Thailand to imitation Tabasco sauce.

No market, no product. I always find foreigners buy fake name brand products (like adidas) in Shanghai, they like them for low price and quality

Nowadays, "made in China" becomes "copy in China", is this a melancholy thing?

Isnt there like a 3floor market hall type place somewhere in China that is just all replica products shops. Now your not telling me China goverment find it hard to find out where fakes are?

Chinese police have seized $US750 million ($A790 million) worth of pirated computer software and broken up a piracy ring in southern China, state media said as Beijing vows to crack down on a problem which has soured trade ties.

Police swooped on the gang last year and arrested 10 people in the boomtown of Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Chinese police acted after the US Federal Bureau of Investigation told China about the gang, Xinhua said.

"Around 70 per cent of the pirated software was sold in the United States, according to the FBI intelligence," the prosecutor said. "The FBI provided names and addresses of some suspects to the Chinese police."

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the trade in pirated consumer goods has reached $US200 billion ($A210 billion) a year, equivalent to two per cent of world trade, with many fakes coming from China.

Washington and Brussels have expressed their displeasure with Beijing numerous times over the problem, and it has proven a major irritant in trade and political ties.

EU officials led by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have been in town this week.

China says it is trying hard to tackle piracy, but that as it is a developing country it may take many years to root out the problem.

[Comment by Aussie: above fake software volume is nothing relative to shipments of other fake products where I estimate that, at best, only 1 in 50,000 shipments of fake stuff is nipped. Really "trying hard".   

 

It's all transacted over the internet. Yet, the Great Firewall of China is the world's most advanced internet security mechanism where all the Net Nannies need do is add a few more keywords like Nike, Nokia and etc to kill the fake stuff. Opps ... a simple exercise like that would be really trying too hard!  

I have seen  this case in Guangzhou TV .Obviously ,  I support authentic brands products as I know they are the reflection of  brand name owners 's w2ork and efforts .But frankly speaking , as a chinese ,it will be a long march to stop fake or replica products in China as we really have so many OFFICALLY ILLEGAL markets for this kind of stuff and the government also get a lot of taxes from shop owners here . Per my understanding , there are very professional replica stuff markets located in Guangzhou ,Shenzhen and Shanghai respectively . The government know this starting from the establishment ,but never stop it . It is a pity and this is china style ...

Actually,the pirated products happens everywhere,not only in China.

Last time,i was joking with my  customer which form Latin America"these  world famous brand always luckly to become your target to pirate" ,and he told he that his brother always traveling to ITALY or USA to taking pictures or buy samples.then they pass the picture&samples to us for copy,it's not the manufactory's fault.

As for the pirated softwhere,what i wanted to say is,i have never useing any  genuine softwhere,the reason is quite simple,I CAN'T AFFORD ,the genuine one of  WinXp is around 200$,but the pirated one just less 1$ without any different.  

Why not?

I am confused.. If the OEM products are indeed made in China in lets say "factory # 1", how can you say they are fake just because "factory # 2" is making them also?  It is not the counterfeit issue that is the real problem for me, but the quality of the products coming out of "factory # 2"  that I have a problem with.  Because after all, we all know the OEM factory is also making the lesser quality items as well, all they care about is pocketing the money. If the quality was good. I could careless who makes it....  Because, regardless of it all, the OEM product is still made in China.


PS.  I do not know how Alibaba holds their head up high when they know 95% of the suppliers in here are selling low quality items and ripping people off.


Anyone know of good suppliers on here with quality goods & not junk?
