Western Union - Safe or not?
Post 1 of 11
I am negotiating a deal with a supplier for "Apple Mac book Pro".
We have agreed on a price, but we are still deciding on a payment method.
I have suggested paypal or escrow - but they seem determined to use western union - But in the way they want payment, is beyond what i have heard before!

They are suggesting that I send the money VIA western union to my OWN name and address, and then once i have recieved payment - for me to change the name and adress to theirs!

I have refused - it seems very werid! I am not even sure that is legal, or if it can be done!

If anyone has any more knowledge on this, or even better - has anyone ever done or heard of payment like this?

Cheers [em3]

Replying to [alexfiddock]: Alex yes it is a scam but it can be done. Why they ask you to do it that way is that when you change your name to theirs WU only has record of the intial payment to. They can claim they never recieved payment because WU record shows you sent money to yourself. Its just another way scammers have learned to get over on the system.

Replying to [alexfiddock]: I think such products like an Apple Mac Book should be bought directly from a reputed store. It is better to pay a little more price than buy it cheaper from another country where you can never be sure if you would even receive anything inside the box!!![em8]

Western Union is 100% safe. It does its job in transferring the money.

The only thing that is unsafe is buyer's own stupidity.

Make a tiny purchase from your local retailer or through well established internet sellers operating in your own country.

Or, if you must place an order in a foreign country, get a Pre-shipment Inspection done before parting with you cash.

Then, whether you pay by TT or by Western Union or get the cash delivered in a brown paper bag is irrelevant.

Seem that something smells with this deal. If you were dealing directly with western union you would be able to verify the transaction. If they do not want to conduct business in an ethical manner move on.
