Why USB flash drives are so expensive?

Dear all

First of all, I'm sorry about my English, it's not well. But I think I can tell you what I'm thinking and also asking.

I took some quotation for 10.000pcs USB flash drives from Chinesse manufacturers. Average price of 1GB USB flash drive is 4USD. I chaffered with them but it changed only 0,20USD. Maybe this is a normal situation but we can take it at 6,8 USD (there are lower prices in my country, this the quality one) and this is the only ones price in Turkey. If we take 10.000pcs of these the price is going to be 5,5USD. No shipping, tax and other costs. Our suppliers taking these products from China too. So where is the problem? Why don't we take good prices? I dont think this a quality difference or fake capacity problem.

My friend told me "You must go to China for lower price. Put the money on supplier's table than every things changes. The price fall down almost %50". Is this true?

If you just looking for lower price, and not concerned about the other factors, such as after-sales warranty, or product quality, then you are doing little justice to compare prices just like that. US$4.00 for 1 GB Flash memory.

As the other knowlegable people wrote about what you get, from what you pay. In other words, you will get monkeys if you pay peanuts.

Memory chips have a base price, that is the price from which the supplier gets from the chip maker, and this price is based on several factors: Quality, Quantity and Supply and Demand. Korean company Samsung is making cheaper chips out of their wafer plants, and this brings down the prices of the flash drives.

If you are offered a price much lower than the market value, you better look at the details of the fine prints, as someone said, you may get the lower capacity drives, and by trick of the trade, called "compression" the chip is made to store 1 GB.

Other factor such as quantity, mentioned by Ranger, is also a matter of price. If your order is consistently large, and have been dealing with them for some time, you will find the price to be lower. This is because, they have to set up the production line for your 1 GB, which is becoming lesser in demand, the market is selling 16 GB, and 2 GB is more common.

See comments by our Chinese member below:

It is items that required warranty when you are selling at your end, so you should make sure about the quality first.

The chip(IC), semi-controler, circuit board, all these are the quality of the USB flash drieves, a Samsung/Hynex IC have life for 4 years, but how long would be for what you are buying from China?

By the way, if you go to China and put your money down to the table, you may not get anything at all !! You will be more likely to get robbed, scammed and cheated than anywhere else.

DEAR SIR

USB PRICES ARE ALWAYS CHANGING. IF YOU GO FOR THE VERY CHEAP ONES, THEN THE QUALITY WILL GO DOWN. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY GOOD QUALITY USB SUPPLIER IN CHINA OR MANUFACTURER??

THANKS

DHILLON
