Is there a market in China for California Wine?
Post 1 of 20
With the growing economy and buying power of China surging forward is there a market for bottled wine now?

What areas? What sort of pricing? What sort of styles of wine?

Just wondering if this is a product that has a growing market in China. I have seen quite a few news stories on the new middle class in China buying lots of electronics and other luxury items. I was wondering how this is translating to the wine industry (if at all).

Replying to [partsman]:Parts, aaahhhhh so wine is still not 'catching on" as yet?

That was my gut thought.

And Oregon is making some good Pinots... that climate really suits this g .... Cabs don't seem to work as well in OR. which doesn't surprise me since the climate doesn't work as well for Cabs.

Replying to [Foow]: Oklahoma in the Heartland of American, has only in the last few years has developed a winery industry. Two of them has moved into the internet world for sales, I do not think many sales are coming from the Asian region. Maybe a good Asian marketing company could J/V something. Roy

Replying to [Fat American]:Wines and beer are not preffered by buyers in Asia. Most favoured are 40% alcohol.Beer has caught up and local brews are preffered over bottled wines.

Replying to [Fat American]:Dear Fat. Tried 2 OK wines.... They have a long way to go.

As soon as OK wines have the same international cache as a Napa wine I would consider it..... Until then, no way, too hard to sell.

They want to PAY me to make markets for them...... that is a different matter

I don't think China's so called mid-class are enjoy wine culture by current stage, most of them like to go bars for fun. And the most imported wines are sold in the entertainment industry.

As the distribution channel for entertainment industry, its is quite in a dark box as my knowledge. Most of them are operationed by someone who has good relationship with local police bereau, who is the administrator here.

And to enter the market, you need to join local wine industry organization as well. For those sold in supermarket channel. I do not see a big remand for personal consumption yet.

Replying to [Foow]: I'm not sure where people are getting their info, but there is A LOT of wine sold in China.. of course less than liquor and beer, but even small shops in the middle of Nowhere, China often have a couple varieties of Chinese made g wine available. However, it's more of a gift or special occasion item, and the quality of wines sold outside of western hotels/restaurants and specialty shops is almost universally poor - in fact, some are basically vinegar with sugar added .. heh.. no exageration.

That being said, if you can get a good quality wine for an especially good price, you could make it work in China. I might have some contacts for you if you are really interested and are able to get the right prices.

Foreign wine(we call it Yangjiu) find itself a market in bars and clubs in China, such as Chivas, Johnnie Walker, Vodka, etc, to name only a few. Most people hop into waterholes to drink foreign alcohols.

The market in China for American wine I think won't be big. As people in China don't just drink wine, wine is usually accompanied by feasts and dinners, while in such occasions, Chinese alcohos(Baijiu, sort of a Chinese spirits; Yellow rice wine and beer) take hold.

If you really mean to do this, it is my personal opinion as a consumer that you target it to bars and clubs.
