I find most China suppliers who are advertising to do international business have a **** you can wire the payment to in US $ from a USA bank. The China supplier will give you the wire instructions. Remember there will be fees or exchange cost on both ends of the transfer.

Most China manufactures/suppliers are repeatable.. You need to do a risk/reward analysis.. If I wire a small payment to test the response of the supplier, will it hurt me if in the unlikely event the supplier is not reputable??

Remember it is confusing to translate between Chinese and English and there can be misunderstandings. It helps if you can find someone in China or a Chinese in the USA who can contact the supplier and make sure there are no misunderstandings, this will also help verify the credibility of the supplier..

what kind of goods? and how much is the amount?

if the amount is about $10,000pcs, you can open an L/C, and pointed a third part issueing the INSPECTION CERFIFICATED on the terms, this means a third party would inspect the goods for you.

T/T: if it is just a few thousands $2-3k, you can pay 100% in advance.
if amount above 4k, 30% deposit, balance against fax of B/L. but these all bassed on supplier trustp *, if you are not sure about it, ask anyone to verify them. then everything would be safe.

Replying to [lovejoy]:It is due to your quantity. If big quantity, may use L/C.But you better arrange somebody to check the quality of productions,if they are below your request, you can refuse.
The other payment for example T/T is not suitable for the two business man in the first time.
If quantity is very small, you can use Western Union or Paypal,
Can you tell me the company's name, maybe I can help you.
It is easy to check if the company is reputable, but hardly to check if it is creditable.

Replying to [lovejoy]:i suggest you to have any agent as it is never advisable to trust a chinese supply. As it not the matter of Money but also for the Quality inspection when loading the container coz even of they dont each in money they can stuff inferior quality product in your container and send it to you .it is just like insuring your deal by giving some premium as a commisiion to the agent.which is very much safe .i hope you understand this.
i am myself a agent for this purpose but i would not force you to contact me but would recommed you to have one if not me.
Wish you Best and SAFE Deal

I suggest you do not deal with a company that does not accept credit cards, unless you have money to waste.

Is the company communicating with you using a free e-mail address, like Yahoo or Hotmail? Not a good sign.

If they have an e-mail account that isn't free, check them out. Last week I found a few that claimed to be in China, but their e-mail server was in California. Do an Internet search. There's information out there about scams.

Apparently, when you mention this place (Alibaba) to natives in China, they all laugh, because it's a known breeding ground for scams.

Just use common sense. If it sounds too good to be true. It is. Western Union offers you no recourse once you send them your money. I promise you that you'll never hear form them again once you send money. Do not send via bank transfer either. Tell them to use that **** to set up a PayPal account. If they won't, don't send them your money!
