Google's new cell phone software
Post 1 of 3
These are some details about Google Phone Software "Android", the open mobile platform from WP:

1. Motorola, Samsung, HTC and and LG Electronics have agreed to use Googles software in some of their phones.

2. Google Phone Software will be available only in second half of 2008.

3. Google wont be making the phones, nor does it plan to stamp its prized brand on the devices. Consumers will have to buy a new phone to get the Google software because the bundle wasnt made for existing handsets.

4. Speech recognition and voice based search will be powered by Nuance software that also makes Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

5. Googles phone software will be free unlike Palm, Nokia, Microsoft of RIM (BlackBerry) who charge handset makers to install their operating systems.

6. The prices of smart phones running Google Phone software would be less since manufacturers wont have to pay for software.

7. In addition, Google will handle some of Web search and Internet connectivity through an alliance with telecom carriers.

8. Google's end game is to create a system in which cellphone service is subsidized through ads, similar to the way many Web services are offered now.

9.Google's plans could threaten the mobile dominance of Yahoo's search platform and Microsoft's operating system, which enjoy lucrative arrangements with carriers and cellphone manufacturers

I have just been reading some articles about the Android OS. Generally I like what I read but with a few questions or reservations .

Of course Google will enter into alliances with the service providers .That is after all where the revenue for Google will be . However, at what cost to the end user ? Both from a cash point of view and a perceived as "intrusive "advertising point of view.

General web surfing on say a desktop Pc has maybe desensitized users to all the advertising on the screen. Will the extra advertising with Android OS alliances , be deemed acceptable by end users on a mobile personal device ? Especially business users ,who use the device as a necessary tool , not a toy . Simply to gain a free OS ? I have some doubts on that one .

Will monthly packages costs from providers maybe depend on a sliding scale of the level of advertising forced on to the end users phone ? .....IE higher cost monthly package = less advertising .So cancelling out the initial savings made in buying a device with a "free" OS. While a lower cost package = more advertising .

That being said , possible interesting times ahead . I look forward to the battle between providers for end user sign ups . Together with the launching of new devices loaded with Android .

You are right. There is a possibility of ads being thrusted on us for subsidizing the bill. Let's have to wait and see the final outcome of the fiasco.
