I would like to design and produce maternity-related clothes and related items. I like Indian fabrics and patterns, and so ideally would like to know:
How do I find a factory that can manufacture my product to MY specifications, where I can have creative control? I want to brand my product and sell it in the U.S. I have made a rough prototype of my first product, of what I hope will become a line of products with my brandname. Is it best to visit a factory in India or see what a sample looks like?

During my searches I end up coming up with other wholesalers or manufacturers that are offering similar products to sell at wholesale. But these have THEIR labels and are THEIR designs.

What do I need to know about importing my product and selling? Is there a FAQ place with these answers, so that you don't have to bother answering seemingly novice questions?

I REALLY do appreciate any input. I am overwhelmed with ALL the information out there. It seems I can't locate answers to my specific questions though.

Replying to [imobaby]: I suggest you to start working with an Indian designer in your town or city. Because there will be lots of trade and product details you need to work out with an expert with. You may find online a looks-like-decent manufacturer in Asia who promises you everything but eventually things won't work out because of communication problems. But if you start partnering with local people you will be walking through rough seas with holding heads [em1]

Replying to [imobaby]: I take from your questions that you already have tried to find someone in you country. If not I will start there. (maybe try your trade and industry department for info).
If an Indian factory is the way that you want to go, that is also fine but I suggest the intervention of an expert in your country on imports. There are a lot of pitfalls relating to importing (taxes for one, legalities the other) and you should first get these sorted out before venturing to India.
Do most of your homework beforehand and try and have at least 3 factories that looks viable before travelling to India. It is, in my opinion, of utmost importance to be on site at the factory to ensure that what is said is what can be delivered.
If there where a FAQ about industry specific import/export I'm sure the person will be a millionare by now[em3]. Every situation is different and although general help is available (like this forum) it is still going to be a bit of trial and error before you get a final result that you are happy with.

Good luck in your venture.

Thanks to both of you for your helpful advice. I'm in NY, but of Indian descent and it wouldn't be too hard for me to go to India to visit factories. I guess I need to figure out the import laws first; it just seems that so many people on this site are hooking up with overseas manufacturers. Seems it might be cheaper and also, the textile patterns of India are not something I think are readily available in the U.S.

This is my first answer after joining the forum and i'm happy to tell you that i have the answers for your questions. I'm also a garment/lingerie export/importer.
Let me help you get started...

1. Where do you want to buy maternity garments from?
I would Suggest China since it is economical, good products, most of the Chinese after being in export/import business for so long very well know the ropes of the business. So we can without batting an eyelid. Give it to them.
2. In China, i have come across many garment factories who will help you with customized logo printing. yes, they will design a logo with your ideas, brand names, which you want to be printed on the products. If you give me 2 days time, i will dig out some contacts of mine and let you know exactly who does customized logo printing for garments. I have done this before and i'm still doing so with lingerie and other inner wears.

If you want to know anything more, feel free to contact me at carrenroy@gmail.com.
I'm based i India and we also supply from China to HK, Middle East, India, etc.

hope the above info has helped!

Your concern no. 1, you have not elaborated one point whether you want limited and selective supplies of your designers' designs or you want mass production. You may get manufacturer of both the levels. Since you seem to be an Indian NRI, I believe, you must be knowing people here who would be able to get your job done. If not, I may help you in getting you in touch with to those whom I know - one designer in Delhi (India) who has her own small fabrication unit and who develops and supplies to only the high-end showrooms as well probably one established factory who does production in bulk for exporters. You can work out modalities with them and assess them if they suit your requirements.

You may conatact me on TM whenever you feel free. You may also leave a message or telephone no. or e-mail id on TM in case I am off line.
