I am a tile and building materials supplier in Singapore. We have been importing from China and other countries.

I wish to relate to you about a China (Xiamen) supplier we have just had regarding their deceitful business practices & defective goods.

Last week, one of my marble veneer tile shipments from a China supplier arrived in Singapore. When my customer opened the boxes, they found the tiles were completely different from the sample the China company had sent us before we confirmed the order. Not only that, but 527 out of 900 tiles were damaged - broken into two, cracked on the top surface and just patched up with plaster or with chipped off corners which were then filled up with plaster. The tiles had been packed in paper boxes only, which we could tear open with our bare hands - not in wooden sea worthy crates.

My customer, the Grand Copthorne hotel owner in Singapore, their design company and the construction company demanded that either all 900 tiles be replaced with the tiles of the same kind as the sample given to us, or the 527 damaged tiles be replaced by his kind of tiles.

The China supplier refuses to accept that his sample differed greatly from the actual goods that arrived. He argues that marble colour and markings vary greatly and cannot be controlled, yet on his website he promises that his marble veneer tiles are uniform in colour because the veneer material is selected.

He claims that paper boxes for tiles are the norm. And that holes, cracks and chipped corners in marble tiles are normal and that plastering to cover them or fill them up is also common.

My Purchase Order to him states that any defective goods must be replaced and delivered at his expense. He now has the audacity to demand I pay for these defective, plastered, and broken tiles and tiles which are not of the same type as his sample, to be replaced.

His flimsy, unbelievable arguments are:

1) `marble has colour and vein variations’. But I have seen this marble in many buildings here and they look nothing like his tiles; they all look like his sample only. I have since ordered replacement tiles and they are ALL like his sample, which was used to deceive us into believing that would be what we were getting.

2) `It is common and natural for marble to have holes and cracks and for these to be patched up with poly resin.’ But I have never seen any marble in any building with holes and cracks patched up with white plaster-like substance.

3) `It is normal for tiles to be packed in paper boxes only.’ But a freight forwarder who has been in business for more than 20 years informs me breakable goods should be packed in wooden sea-worthy crates. Would you send a porcelain cup in a paper box by mail and expect it not to be broken or damaged?

Not only is he unreliable and incompetent and unprofessional, but he is downright dishonest and criminal.

Below are his details for your reference:

Even with Alibaba Gold members they are frauds and cheaters, this is one company that I’d checked there information and found it is correct, but when we dealt with them they steal our money. Our order was just to get samples for new HTC windows mobiles and after paying them money, they toke long time to send the samples then after more than 25 days we received very bad copies of Nokia mobiles that are worthless. I’m glad that we did not get involved in large quantities with such company. Now, for more than one month I'm trying to contact them put they are not responding to my emails, messages or calles. Truly, I think making business through Alibaba.com is not a good idea and especially with Chinese company. If any body planning to get involve with them, I woud recommend to go there and see by your self.

For your information the mentioned company details are:

Replying to [Safe Trading Admin]: I would be extremly cautious while working with companies, even companies which claim gold status. I put a deposit down with a company to produce orders which was a "gold" supplier, after getting defective product I asked for product to be made according to specs. I even had a contract signed that stated the company would not reproduce or sale designs with my logos. Bottom line they did, be careful, do your due dilligance and study the company's your working with!
