Moderators: Is voting a good measure?
Post 1 of 3
Throughout most of our lives most of us get by by making our decisions based on what we feel is right for us. Good or bad we live with the outcomes of our decisions.

To vote for a moderator for me is a bad choice in judgement. First off other than the posts and comments we see written by these people we are voting for someone we really don't know.

Let me get one point accross: If I owned Alibaba and wanted my company to grow I would want the person who will reflect the views and opinions of my company, not somebody who is popular with some of my customers. I the owner would screen the prospects and ask them to answer a series of questions and give answers on a variety of scenarios designed to test the prospects ability to respond to possible problems on the system.

The moderator should be a customer service minded person with one goal in mind. To make Alibaba the place to do business.

I don't believe we should vote on a person to be a moderator and it shouldn't be such a popularity contest. Lets find the best people not by vote but by merit.

I agree with you and won't be surprised if some would find the results beyond their expectations because sometimes people are more driven by their enthusiasm to participate in the contests (for one or other reasons) than to learn more about the participants before casting their votes and it is applicable with each and every voting system.

But I also understand that all these contests, awards, advertising and promotional signature etc. are the ways to attract more and more people towards the forums and there is nothing wrong in it.

Also it is not necessary that one need to become a moderator to serve a community. A keen desire and attitude to do the same is the most important thing.

We can always help others whether as a moderator or member and keep giving our ideas and suggestions while having faith in the policies of management.

You've raised an excellent point. But I do believe that Alibaba management has the wisdom to select moderators and will not base it merely on popular vote. I think they have used this promo, as Braham has mentioned, to attract participation from members. If you will note forum participation is still on the low side when compared to the overall membership size at Alibaba. The candidates for moderators have either applied or were nominated by the current moderators, invited and gave their acceptance. And I'm happy for the diversity of candidates, each with his/her own strengths. English fluency is not necessarily a requirement as well as long as the person can communicate his/her ideas and still be understood is important.
