To Tekle: Import tax
Post 1 of 3
Hi Dr Tekle
I'm in Australia. My scenario is this.
A few of the Indonesian and Chinese companies I have been in contact with have advised me not to worry about import tax as they themselves have already paid it when they ship export their products. From my understanding - In Australia, if the value of what i import exceeds $1000AU from one particular supplier, then I will be taxed. I'm a assuming the law in these countries are different to mine. Is this correct?

Replying to [kendyson74]: Dont buy into what any of these companies are telling you. Its a false statement unless their shipping terms to you are DDP or Delivered Duty Paid. This is how some large corporations send goods to their supply chains in other countries.

Also beware of not having the certifications required for import. You need to do some reading and review my friend as to Australian Customs Clearance. www.customs.gov.au [em15]

I agree, your assumption appears to be correct. As you might be aware national laws vary particularly when it comes to tariff. Most often it depends on the value of the transaction (less than certain value) and the intent, meaning as to whether the goods imported will be for commercial use or personal use. Investigate more before you take action.
