Importing women's apparel to Florida
Post 1 of 26
I'm moving to Florida from Vancouver, Canada next month and wanted to get more information on the rules of importing from China to the Tampa/Miami area. Once I receive the products (mostly women's apparel and accessories), approx 80% will be used locally (in Florida) but the remaining portion will be exported from Florida into Western Canada for distribution. What's the best way for me to do this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Replying to [smallindulgences]:Hello, I would suggest the U.S.Customs web site. I´m sure you can Google it. Also I would suggest that you find a good freight forwarder who has experience importing from China. Make sure that the items you are importing are not fake, that will save you from alot of problems.

Also I would like wish you good luck. I lived in Florida for 13 years before I moved to Ecuador. I worked in the Sarasota area for 11 years and the Miami area for 2 years. I still occasionally work out of my Fathers office in Venice, FL and each time I go there I´m sad to see how bad the economy is there. Small locally owned businesses and even some national chains are going out of business. A large amount of the people there ( approx 90% )do not have and disposable income.
Best of Luck,
David

I an't tell from your post whether you have exprience in Canada in doing this and are just moving to Miami, or whether this is a new gig you want to start once you move to Miami.

If it is the former then you should already know the buying/shipping stuff. If it isn;t then you are about to discover how much fun (NOT!) is is to import clothing. The rules are crazy and as long as your arm. I don;t know them well but do know apparel (textiles in general) are about the most painful things you can import to the US. Quotas etc etc make life exciting.

The other thing you will need to remember is that shipping to Vnacouver and shipping to Miami is a whole different ball game. Last time I checked quickly a few weeks ago a Container into the west coast was about $1500.00..... into Miami was about $2200. So there is an added cost you need to keep in mind.

Also importing to the US then re-exporting back to Canada is quite possibly not a good idea. You import it to miami then ship it back to western canada you are looking at 3,000+ miles of freight costs! Might work out best to have 2 shipments. One to Miami and one to Vancouver.

You have a TON of researching to do on all this.

1) Most of the women apparels imported from China are still under the quota system until end of 2008. But no one know wheteher the system will be extended or not. The below are some category which involoved quota for your reference.

ladies Cotton knitted blouse
polyester knitted blouse
cotton woven trouseres (including jeans)
polyester woven trouseres (including jeans)
ladies brassiers
ladies woven blouse

If you want to avoid the quota system, you may consider to import the apparels which are made with silk, Ramie, linen, wool or cashmere.
now te quota price is from USD 3.50/dozen - USD 10.00/dozen depends on which category.

Export procedure:
1) if the supplier provide both quota/ export lisence, then you don't have to worry about it. Otherwise, you have to buy it by your own.
2) If the supplier do not arrange the export customs formaility for you, you have to hire a forwarder in China, who will arrange the export customs formaility for you. It will cost around RMB 500/set.
3) For those items which are woven fabric, wool or cashmere, it need a commodity examine certificate, also known as commodity inspection certificate. Which cost from RMB 1,000 - 3,000 depends on the total value of the commodity.
4) For the sea-freight charges form China-Miami, it cost around USD 1,350/ 2,200. If less than a container, it will be around USD 45 - 60 / CBM.
5) If you quantity is less than 100 KGS per shipment, I suggest you to ship it by AIR. Contact some local Chinese forwarder, we all have some special rate of DHL / FEDERAL EXPRESS/ TNT, they can provide the full service, including the customs clearance in USA and delivery. FYI, most of the forwarder would have a special rate rather than you, the situation is same as hotel booking, the agent would have a better price than you.
6) If you are not familiar in customs clearance formaility, you better to hire a local broker in USA, as it involoved import lisence and the AMS information. IE, once you got the Quota/export license, Bill of Lading, you must send it to USA, and apply the import lisence from the US customs 3 days before the cargo arrival.
7) After the import license, then pay the duty, the duty of cotton fabric is cheaper than polyester. But the cost of cotton is more expensive than polyester.
8) when those procedure completed, just hire a truck to deliver your cargo.

For the Vancouver shipment, you better to seperate it, as apparels imported to Vancouver do not required Quota. The export/ import procedure is almost the same as US shipment, except the export license. The sea freight chares is around USD 40 - 65 / CBM.

Hopefully, my information is useful for you. If you need further information, you may leave me a msge here or send to my email: lampson@chinaasia.com.hk
