I made my own company website......its not easy, but I did it with $0
Post 1 of 12
Note: I am not trying to sell my company's product here.
I have set up my company online website a couple of month ago and now it is official opened for business. I have been receiving lots of customers order and my company website is doing very well.
And all of these were done with $0.00..... well actually I lied. I paid $20 a year for the domain name..... hahahahaha....but the others are all free.
I used oscommerce to install and set up my shopping cart. I used Paypal as a payment. And the blog software that I used freely is distributed by "Free Software Foundation, Inc." Everything is free.
I designed the banner, I used photoshop, illustrator, and macromedia flash 8 for some flash project. My shop even has an Auction link to Ebay. Again Everything is absolutely free.
I did not spend a single penny. And it took me less than a month to set up everything.

I am really proud of my website.
Give any comment you like. Oh, by the way, this is just a reference for people who want to make their own website. If this is an online shop that fits your company, I can give you free advice like where to get open source code, free shopping logo, design etc....www.ryu-mei.com/catalog
The web link may be considered as a trade lead by some folks. But if the moderator were to think so, then I will take it down. The reason for this link is to help reader to know what functions were in my website that can be done with $0. Without the reference site, then it will be difficult to explain in words what can be done, and what cannot. I can in theory reference other site, but it will still be consider as trade lead, no? In any case, this is a good debate, and I am all ears. Tom

My father told me, nothing is free in this world, except Sunshine and rain water.
When Thomas said "absolutely free" he did not mentioned the time he spent to design and upload his website, the software he uses if the Photoshop and Flash are licensed, they may cost around US$1000.00 per package.
The computers he has to purchase, the Internet Service Provider, and the electrical bills. So, if you add all these up, you will find a figure which is not free at all. However it will be lower than that charged by the Professional Web Designers.
Not every one is like Thomas, he has to obtain some skills and knowledge.
First of all, he has to know HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), and he also have to learn the operating system of the Adobe software.
It takes hours of pain-staking time, and a level of experience, which is developed along as he do one web page to another. If there are templates, it would be easier, there is no need to re-invent the wheel.

....and dont forget to mention the computer you needed to use the softwares, a desk to put the computer, a chair to sit, food to eat, water to drink.........it may not be absolute Zero money, but we all know what it is all about.
I forget to mention that people fail to make use of the library or their college campus. They have computer facilities, books, software, etc etc. for students and residents with a small library card fee. Software may be old, but still useable since I use the software like Dreamweaver since year 2000 version and it still works fine. Moreover, there are computer books and instruction that you can read and spend your energy on.
Picture and graphic design is a problem. W/o good software program, you cannot make good design concept for your webpage. One of my friends used a copy of the student version software to make his own graphic design and even though the functions are limited, but hey, with a little bit of out of the box thinking, all design can become pretty good. I have the full version of the graphic software photoshop plus all the cool functions that came with the package, but seriously, I only use 1/3 of it, the other 2/3 are simply to difficult for me to work with since I have limited knowledge of photoshop. And by the way, I uninstalled the other add-on application because these add-on app can really use up all your computer resources and sometimes stall your computer while the photoshop is loading. So, be ware of it.
HTML, CSS, JAVAscript, PHP........etc etc... are language base that you needed to build a good website. Even though you do not have these language skills, then that is too bad. Either you spend money to hire someone to do it for you or you can spend some time to learn it. Time may be priceless, but it is free in this Material World.

Thank you for sharing your experience unselfishly. I am sure many newbies will benefit from it.
You mentioned CSS as with the others like PHP, HTML, JavaScript. There is difference with CSS, which is a Style Codes and the rest which are Script Language. You should upgrade your Dreamweaver to the MX 2004, where the styles are enhanced. But that is sufficient to build impressive websites. Where you are stuck with the applications, you can always count on your HTML, which is not as data base as XML.
An excellent piece of art is what business is all about. I am a music lover, and can immerse myself into music to find a hiding place when I am emotionally upset, besides being alone with God in prayers. China is building up this art culture, and I was told has 20 million budding piano students all over the country. The young students were spurred on by their mentor, Lang Lang.
One fine day, I switched on the television to our Cultural Channel, and there was a documentary on Lang Lang, the greatest musician I have ever heard who mixed Chinese music into the West. His album, "The Dragon Songs" is one fine CD I must buy.
Now, coming to the point again, I should say to study business administration, marketing, e-commerce and finance is just to know the science, but to apply them into our daily lives is an art.
Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Site Builder, are all software tools for building a website, but to make a website which is pleasing to the eye, and friendly to the target audience is like making a painting or a sculpture with the tools. At the end of it is the customer whom you want to connect to and relate to them. "The Customer is the Center of all Businesses" .. KENICHI OHMAE.
