Hi,

Say I engage sellers in Alibaba, and one of them quoted me a price. Then later, another gfuy quated a better price. How do I tell the first guy to better his price?

Well it's not always about the price of the product, you have to see what the supplier/factory will offer you,

Product quality, certification, type of packing, carton used (colour) or basic, manuals, extras, free parts %, production speed, machines or manual workers, quality checking and management, warranty, type of materials they use for the product, so please make sure both companies offer the same service before you feel the price to more than the other.
But it is very easy to ask the factory for a lower price, they can say yes or no, or meet you in the middle [em19], your buying power would make this more in your favor [em18]

Firstly you don't TELLhim he has to do anything.......

There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting a potential supplier know that you have received a better price for the same product. But you should be asking yourself WHY the price is better. Quality? Service? Trustworthyness.....all sorts of things you have to make sure of before commiting to one supplier or another.

If you decide that the lower priced product is what you want to go with, just let the first supplier know that you have chosen to use a different supplier. He may be able to macth the 2nd price and until you do more research you waon;t know if the first guy will be the better long term guy or not.

The product I am buying is pretty generic, eg $2 unbranded garment. This is something consumers wear for a year and then discard without a second thought.

I thought I be straight up with the first guy and told him about the better offer. He replied saying he can't match the price.

I told him that's ok, not to worry for now, let me investigate the second guy first, see if he is genuine (or a con artist waiting to scam me) and if his product stacks up as good as he claimed.

My first guy said cool, he will wait for my call.

So I got in touch with the second guy but no reply as yet (two days already).

of course when you say the price is different they always say because of better quality. if you ask what exactly is different and they can not offer, then, it is just an excuse... keep on looking and get more offers too this can help you better understand what is "normal" price on the market for the moment

Replying to [David Spasov]:I agree with you. You must know the market price first. Level a is $20-25, level b is $10-15, etc. Get more quotations as you can. Good luck![em17]

Replying to [jadedev]:Hi I suggest you just ask the 1st guy make a sample under your target price, if he said he can not do, just try persuade him to do one, no matter how bad it might be, then you can hv a idea what the 1st guy can supply, for the 2nd guy, keep push.

If I ask the 1stguy to make a cheaper item, I am sure he can do it with a lower qualify fabric but what will that acheive?

My customers won't want to buy clothes that tear after one wash, it has to last at least 1 year.

Replying to [jadedev]:Hi , try show your customer the cheaper sample from 1st guy, and try to explain to your client, maybe they will accept, you know, now every cost is rising in China and cosidering the infect of RMB rate, mybe your clients can accept a higher price or a little diffirent quality products.
meantime keep pushing the samples from the 2nd guy to compare with the 1st's sample.
if all above don't work, maybe you hv to find 3ird one or abandon this item[em11]

Jade, it's really very simple.

The first guy offered you a price and is prepared to make a sample for you

The 2nd guy came in cheaper (but by how much??????) and now does not respond to you.

Are you happy with the price the first guy gave you? check his sample, and if the sample and price is O.K.then go for it. BUT, be careful. If it is made from cotton or poly/cotton, then make sure that the fabric is colour-fast AND pre-shrunk. As an example, under Australian conditions, a 2% shrinkage is allowed for garments, any more than that and you will be replacing the stock.

Also, hope you know that there is a 17.5% Import duty on garments Plus 10% GST.
