Post 1 of 6
Could you please to explain me clearly meaning for "soft offer" ?

I received soft offer from iron ore suppliers but I dont understand if there is something we need to notice or if it could be considered as a fixed offer?

Thank you in advance for your help.

A “soft” offer is an offer where buyers are given the opportunity to order without paying with cash or credit card before receiving their merchandise. They merely check a box on the order form which reads, “bill me later.”

Or if you’re generating a lead, a “soft offer” is usually used for an expensive product.

A “hard” offer is an offer where payment by cash or credit card MUST be made with the order before it is shipped.

This strategy is usually used for an inexpensive product requiring a payment by credit card.

My learned friend Braham is correct above, however, in your case, where you are speaking about iron ore, a soft offer is usually an indicative price. Once you accept such a soft offer, the 2 parties (Buyer and Seller), can then negotiate a firm price in the vicinity of the soft offer. If a Hard Offer is made, then the price is fixed.

Hope this helps

I would like to add some more on the replies given by Braham and Grigo. In the iron ore business, the price is the main concern in the soft offer. You have to firm up your price and terms based on mutual understanding. You can negotiate further over the soft offer. Once agreed on all, a Full corporate offer or draft contract is sent to you. A word of caution, there are spot market sellers and annual contract sellers. You have to be watchful on the validity period of the price.
