Hi all,

I am looking into importing video games and related items from Japan & Hong Kong. It appears that most related items are in the harmonized tariff schedule as 9504.10.00 stat suffix 00 which apparently is 0% tariff.

That said I need to bring in more then $250 at a time and all toys seem to need a formal entry. (along with textiles and some other items) Apparently the normal amount to need formal entry is $2000.

I was hoping to just have these mailed to me through the post office but apparently if My supplier requires an order of $500 or more at a time and a formal entry is needed for $250 this wont work.

What do I need to do for a formal entry or do I have this wrong and I can have items sent to me through the post office ?

Also Am I right about the toys, games, and sporting goods and the 250 limit as opposed to the 2000 limit ?

Also does this limit vary based on if I am going to consume it or not ?

Replying to [hideous]: If your talking about the game disks you are right. If your talking about game consoles or anything that has either an electrical or electronic circuit you would be wrong.

Its also true that all toys above $250.00 require a formal entry. Be aware though that there will be a charge for handling of any package by the U.S. Postal Service. If formal entry is required on a parcel, the parcel is held at the Customs international mail branch and notice is sent to the addressee of the package's arrival. The addressee can then go to the nearest Customs office to file the formal entry on the package.

One thing you may want to do is to get your hands on the International Mail Import publication
Customs publication No. 0000-0514

Now then with all that said, do you really think you can import legitmate game disks cheaper than you can buy them from a distributor in the U.S. that imports them by the thousands?

Remember if you get caught importing illegal copies of games you can face serious fines starting at $25K even if you only imported $250.00. I'd make very sure your supplier has the license to sell the games. You might even want to check into TRIPS

I am actually trying to import games

and

controllers

and

maybe consoles.

I am not trying to import US versions I am trying to import Japanesse versions of items sold here.

IE Japanesses PS3 etc etc

You seem ultra knowledgable on the subject.

My ultimate question is if I am inporting 500-1000 dollars worth of these items what is the best route to go based on time vs trouble.

Post Office

UPS or (other premium shipper)

Other

I undderstand what your saying about games. Most people that import them I am sure do so by the 1000's atleast and also have distribution channels set up.

I am looking at more of a niche market selling on online sites etc.

I read the items you gave to me and I don't see anything that says what I am trying to do is illegal. ?
