How to do business with Indian people?
Post 1 of 16
I had some experiences of doing business with Indians.I have some Indian friends in India. They can help me sometimes when I deal with some people in India. For the most time,Indians tend to disregard the contract already signed.Like for example,I sell candy machines---candy depositing line to a small company in Delhi. They had signed a formal contract with me in China. We agreed on every terms in the contract. After they returned to India, they soon changed their mind and never pay any money to our company for buying the machine. And by the terms,we can never send any machine to them.
They later asked for another machine packing machine----single twist packing machine for candy. We made P/I and they again never pay any money to us.So there was no deal for both sides for the candy machine.I also felt the skilfullness of business bargaining.I don't mean it's waste of time. But I really learned a lot from them.

I know some reasons for this, but not for all.
They had come to our candy machine factory and saw most of our machines. When they returned, soon changed mind. There is a big reason that Indians would possibly think that Chinese machine is not so reliable.Another reason is that when there is a need to repair, who'll be in charge of the affair? There also lack of spare parts in India for a specific machine.Indians are sometimes suspicious to other people.I think they are generally not rich at all.I noticed that there are many Indians doing business with Chinese and they are very good at bargining.

For Indian business people, they normally ask for commission if they are willing to work for you.I have a friend who is doing paper business, and he worked for us for the packing machine business. One time one of my staff offered FOB China price without mentioning his commission exluded. If he offers price to his customers,he has to add his commissions to FOB price. But he insist on the our offered price include his commission 10%.We never offer price to customer too low, what should I do?shall we step back and admit the C10 included.I would say NO.And also the commission we give to agent is never so high.

Replying to [John Food Wang]:Really the demand for commission was very unreasonable, we also have our agents worldwide, normally we provide commission upto 5%, One party in Poland also insisted for 10% commission, I replied him back that we can offer at the most 5%, He hasn't replied till date.
Neither he said that proposal is not workable nor he said that it is acceptable more then 5 reminders I have send uptill now over mail. tried to contact over phone also but not succeeded.[em4]

Thanks for presenting your ideas and let us share with you.We normally trade with Indians based on trust because we think being in a business one has to have certain confidence on his/her partners. If you treat everybody as a liar, then who can you trust around?
But sometimes you have to be a little careful for many reasons, like for instance,if I send the packing machines to India and I only get 30% paid as a deposit. How can I get the balance to be paid if I send machines to the hands of the client? To the buyer's point view,he cares for the quality of the goods and sometimes is unwilling to paid too fast. But after he get goods by deferred payment,he tends to find many reasons not to make full payment. So there is a fairness in businesses.Who should be the judge? This is especially difficult for dealing with new customers.

Replying to [John Food Wang]: The tendency you are talking about is seen all over the world. But you have experienced the same with Indian Buyer.

They might sign the proforma invoice with any particular supplier but still they keep on searching for better offer with added benefits. If they are able to get some deal they cancel the first deal and proceed with the second.

If my customer sign the P/I personally I do not consider that I got the deal unless and until I get paid the advance.

Most of the time we ask for 30% advance balance by L/C at sight and we happily pay the banking charges.

As far the commission is concerned normally we pay 3% - 5%. But whenever our agents clinch the deal for us with more margin we share the same with them which boost them to get more and more good deal for us.
